THE PLACE SHE COULD BREATHE

Chapter 5 Home had always been Jasmine’s escape. Not because it was perfect, but because it was hers. No one there watched her like a project. No one measured her silence or questioned her every move. It was just noise, warmth, and people who loved her in their own chaotic way. The moment she stepped inside that evening, she was met with familiar chaos. “JAYDEN! Give it back!” “I found it first!” “That’s my charger!” “It’s our charger!” Jasmine paused at the doorway, watching her twin brother and little sister argue like it was a matter of life and death. For the first time that day, she smiled. “You two are unbelievable,” she said, dropping her bag near the couch. Jayden looked up immediately. “Ah, the queen returns.” Lila ran straight to her. “You’re late!” “I noticed,” Jasmine replied, hugging her lightly. Jayden’s eyes lingered on her a little longer than usual. The playful expression on his face faded slightly. “…You okay?” he asked. Jasmine hesitated. “I’m fine.” He didn’t believe her, but before he could press further, their mother’s voice came from the kitchen. “Jasmine, come help me.” Jasmine slipped away without answering Jayden’s stare. The kitchen always felt different from the rest of the house. Warmer. Calmer. Her mother stood by the stove, stirring quietly. “You didn’t eat properly today,” she said without looking up. Jasmine blinked. “How do you know that?” “I’m your mother.” That was the end of the discussion for her. Jasmine leaned against the counter, suddenly feeling heavier than she looked. For a while, neither of them spoke. Then Jasmine said it. “He hit someone.” Her mother paused. Not shocked. Just still. “Jason?” she asked. Jasmine nodded. “For talking to me,” she added quietly. Silence settled in the kitchen. Not uncomfortable, but heavy in a way that made the air feel tighter. Her mother finally turned. “Did he hurt you?” “No.” “Did it scare you?” Jasmine opened her mouth. Then stopped. Because the answer wasn’t simple. “…Yes,” she admitted. Her mother sighed softly, like she already understood more than she was saying. “Love should not feel like fear sweetheart,” she said gently. Jasmine looked down at her hands. “I think I’ve been ignoring things.” Her mother stepped closer and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Then stop ignoring them.” Later in the living room, Tessa was already there like she owned the space. Feet on the couch. Talking too loudly. Arguing with Jayden about a movie neither of them agreed on. “That movie was terrible,” Tessa insisted. “You just don’t understand storytelling,” Jayden argued back. “I understand wasted time, and that film was a full-time job in disappointment.” Lila laughed cuddled up closely to Tessa and enjoying the chaos. Jasmine walked in slowly and shook her head. “You came over without telling me?” Tessa looked at her like it was obvious. “You didn’t reply my messages. That means something is wrong.” Jayden pointed at Tessa. “I like her.” “You should,” Tessa said. “I’m the only responsible adult here.” Jasmine sat down quietly. Tessa noticed immediately. Her tone changed. “Okay,” she said more seriously. “What happened?” Jasmine hesitated for a moment. Then she spoke. “Jason got into a fight tonight.” Jayden straightened instantly. “What?” “For me,” Jasmine added. Tessa didn’t even look surprised. “That’s not romantic,” she said flatly. “I know.” That answer made both of them pause. Tessa leaned forward slightly. “You know?” Jasmine nodded slowly. “It didn’t feel like protection,” she said. “It felt like something else.” Jayden frowned. “Like what?” Jasmine swallowed. “Like I belong to him.” The room went quiet. Even Lila stopped talking. Tessa’s expression hardened slightly. “I’ve been saying this for months,” she muttered. “I didn’t want to hear it,” Jasmine admitted. That honesty sat heavily between them. Jayden leaned forward now, less joking than before. “So what are you saying?” Jasmine looked at all of them. And for the first time, she didn’t avoid the thought. “I don’t want that,” she said quietly. Silence again. Jayden spoke first. “Then leave him.” “It’s not that simple.” “Why not?” Tessa asked immediately. Jasmine hesitated. Because that was the question she didn’t have an answer for yet. “I don’t know,” she said honestly. Tessa nodded once. “Then figure it out. You deserve to breathe, Jasmine.” That sentence stayed with her longer than anything else. Because it was exactly how she felt. Like she couldn’t breathe properly anymore. That night, Jasmine lay in bed staring at the ceiling. The house was quiet now. The chaos had settled. But her mind hadn’t. Jason. The fight. Her mother’s words. Tessa’s warning. Jayden’s reaction. Everything overlapped in her thoughts. But underneath it all, something else was growing. A question she had avoided for too long. What if I leave? Her phone buzzed. She reached for it slowly. Unknown number. One message. You’re starting to see it. Jasmine froze. Her fingers tightened around the phone. Her breathing changed slightly. Because this didn’t feel like coincidence anymore. It felt like someone was waiting inside her thoughts. Watching the exact moment she began to break away… and choosing now to step closer.
