Chapter 8
The next morning, campus looked exactly the same. Students laughed outside lecture halls. Music played from someone’s speaker nearby. People rushed to class with coffee cups and unfinished assignments. But Jasmine didn’t feel normal anymore. Something inside her had changed after last night.
“Okay, I’m officially over this,” Tessa said as she dropped into the seat beside her. “You’ve been staring into space for ten minutes.”
Jasmine gave a faint smile. “Maybe I just like silence.”
“You hate silence,” Tessa replied immediately. “Silence means you’re thinking, and when you think too much, bad decisions happen.”
That almost made Jasmine laugh.
Tessa studied her face more carefully. “You didn’t sleep.”
“That obvious?”
“You look emotionally exhausted.”
Jasmine looked down at her phone again.
Still nothing from Jason.
No texts.No missed calls.Nothing.
And somehow, that bothered her more than the constant messages used to.
“He hasn’t contacted me,” she admitted quietly.
Tessa frowned immediately. “That’s suspicious.”
“I know.”
A brief silence settled between them.
Then Tessa leaned closer. “Tell me exactly what happened yesterday.”
Jasmine hesitated before finally speaking. Not every detail but enough for Tessa’s expression to slowly harden.
“He grabbed you?” she repeated.
Jasmine nodded once.
Tessa leaned back in disbelief. “Yeah, no. I officially dislike him now.”
“You used to like him?”
“I tolerated him for you,” Tessa corrected. “Huge difference.”
Jasmine sighed softly, part of her still felt guilty and she hated that.
*Across the city, inside Williams Company headquarters
The atmosphere was entirely different.
Cold, controlled, quiet.
Nicholas stood beside the large screen in Williams’ office, reviewing the latest report.
“Jason hasn’t contacted her since last night,” he said.
Williams remained seated behind the desk, expression unreadable.
“His movement patterns have changed. Less routine. Less stable.” A pause.
Then Williams spoke calmly.
“Good.”
Nicholas glanced at him briefly before continuing. “There are signs of emotional instability.”
Williams leaned back slightly.
“Pressure reveals truth,” he said simply.
Nicholas nodded once.
“And Jasmine?” Williams asked.
“She appears unsettled. No direct contact has been made from our side since the last message.”
Silence filled the room briefly.
Then Williams said,
“Maintain distance.”
Nicholas hesitated slightly. “That may push her back toward Jason.”
Williams’ eyes lifted slowly, Cold and Steady.
“She already sees him,” he replied. “Now she needs to understand him.”
Nicholas stayed quiet after that because Williams never spoke like someone making guesses. He spoke like someone waiting for events to unfold exactly the way he expected.
*Back on campus
Jasmine stood outside her lecture hall adjusting the strap of her bag.
Something felt wrong again. That same feeling from before. Like eyes were following her.
She turned slightly.
Nothing unusual. Students everywhere. People talking. Walking. Laughing.
But the feeling stayed.
Her phone buzzed suddenly.
Jasmine froze before checking it.
Unknown number.
You didn’t leave.
Her stomach tightened instantly.
Then another message appeared.
But you will.
Jasmine stared at the screen, pulse quickening.
This wasn’t random anymore.
Someone was watching too closely.
“Jasmine.”
She looked up immediately.
Jason stood a few feet away and he looked terrible and exhausted.
His eyes looked tired, like he hadn’t slept properly. His usual controlling appearance was slightly undone.
“I’ve been looking for you,” he said quietly.
Jasmine instinctively straightened.
“What do you want?” The distance in her voice visibly affected him.
“I need to talk to you.”
“We already talked.”
“Not like this.”
Tessa stepped forward immediately. “She said no.”
Jason ignored her completely. His eyes stayed fixed on Jasmine.
“Five minutes,” he said softly. “That’s all I’m asking for.”
Jasmine hesitated.
Tessa grabbed her arm lightly. “You don’t owe him anything.”
She knew that.
But seeing Jason like this unsettled her more than his anger ever had. Because he looked like someone falling apart.
“…Five minutes,” Jasmine said finally.
Tessa frowned instantly. “Jasmine.”
“I’ll be okay.”
Tessa clearly didn’t believe that.
“Fine,” she muttered. “But I’m staying nearby.”
Jason’s jaw tightened slightly at that, but this time he didn’t argue.
That alone felt strange.
As Jasmine walked with him across campus, her phone remained clenched in her hand. Her heart still raced from those messages. From Jason. From everything.
And for the first time, she fully realized something. She wasn’t trapped between two men. She was trapped between two different kinds of danger.
One loud, emotional, and falling apart in front of her.
The other silent…
watching her every move from the shadows.
