Brooke’s POV I come home expecting more yelling from Jason, and for about ten seconds, I receive it. But I can tell seeing my scars is too much for him, and before long, he simmers down and helps Alex with dinner. I feel Milo’s on me for longer than I’m comfortable with, but I focus on talking to Kate about Cliff, a safer subject. She had a wonderful time. She doesn’t use the word wonderful, of course; she says she had an okay time, which really means wonderful. He made her lunch, and they took a walk around downtown Durham. He pointed out all his favorite spots, and even showed her the Durham branch of his father’s prestigious company, whose home base is in Chapel Hill. She doesn’t smile when she tells the story, but her eyes do. I’m surprised by how much better the apartment feel
