Chapter 37: A New Day After that night, Reuben was a little less guarded with Lowell. He still refused to go to church, but he was willing to sit and listen when Lowell occasionally pulled out the Bible after dinner and read some of his favorite verses. At those times, Reuben sat politely, but Lowell could see that he held most of what was being read in disdain.
