Chapter 30: Wedding Day Jerusha awoke before dawn that Tuesday in November of 1943 knowing that in just a few hours she would be married to Reuben Springer. She slowly got out of bed, dressed, threw on her heavy coat and some boots, and slipped out of the house in the dark. There were a few inches of snow on the ground, and the air was crisp. She wandered out to the barn and climbed the ladder to the loft. She found her place in the hay and lay down on the soft cushion, letting her perplexing thoughts have their say.
