Chapter 18: Nate POV
It felt like weeks or months passing by, though I'm sure it was a few days at best. I'd been in battle before but nothing like this. They just seemed to keep coming at us. Both sides had injuries and casualties. Phillip kept slipping away, evading me, like he knew he would die at my hands if I got ahold of him.
"Brother, what should we do? Our warriors are tiring. They are hungry!" Matthew linked me. "Meet me at the North border. We need a plan. We need to end this." We met with Daniel and Thomas. "How do we win this?" Daniel asked. I tried to come up with a strategy but honestly my strength and energy was waning.
"Get them to the clearing." Willa mind-linked me. She was in the safe room with the other vulnerable members. I had closed our link to conserve energy but I couldn't anymore. "What?" I asked. "Redirect the battle to the clearing, you know the one. I have a plan." I sighed, exhausted. At this point any option was better than none. "We need to get them to the clearing under the cliff," I linked to the warriors around me. "Start getting them turned around and lead them in that direction." She was leading them right to where the sandpits were hidden. They were old rouge traps. Did she want to try to trick them into falling in?
"Once they are in the clearing mindlink everyone in our pack to retreat." Willa's instructions were clear but made no sense. "Retreat? What are you thinking, Mate?" "Just do it. I've already initiated the other part of my plan." I struggled to understand. "And what plan is that?" I asked. "I called Alec's family. The hunters are coming." I fell silent. Had my mate lost her mind?! "You called the hunters? Are you insane?!" She growled into the link. "Don't you talk to me that way! The hunters will do in minutes what would take us weeks!" I sighed, "And how will you keep them from killing us exactly?" She purred, "That's for me to know and for you to find out." I tried to argue but she cut the link. I barked orders to the others around me. They all looked at me like I was a mad wolf.
Our numbers were dwindling. Phillip's army was beating us, exhausting us. Our strategy of redirection was not easy but after another hour we managed to get them to the clearing. My pack kept fighting no matter how worn down they were.
Most of my original pack knew the placement and layout of the clearing and the sandpits. Unfortunately some who came from Leonidas' pack still didn't know the area. Paul's brother Shawn was the first of our men to get stuck in the sandpit. I tried to help Paul pull him out but he just kept sinking farther and farther in. There was no sadder sight that day. The loss of a brother, a deep wound for Paul and the whole pack.
"Sandpits?! Is that the best you got?!" Phillip appeared, his face one of victory. He looked as if he thought he had already won. "Mate, mate,Nate!!!" Willa's voice rang through my mind. "What?" I asked. "They are here. They are on top of the cliff. I need you to quietly get our men in the cave and let the hunters do their thing."
"Do as Luna says, retreat to the cave. Leave our opponents in the clearing." "Yes Alpha." I got all of my men into the cave and used a boulder to secure us. Philip continue to taunt us from outside, calling us all kinds of horrible names. I peeked out the boulder to see the enemy grouping together, most likely strategy meetings.
Suddenly we heard screams. We heard the sounds of guns and crossbows. I imagined what was happening outside. The hunters were terminating Phillip and his warriors. After several minutes Willa linked me "It's done," she said. How she knew I don't know but it scared me shitless. My wife is very scary.
We stepped out from the cave to find a horrific scene. Bodies and blood everywhere around us. To my surprise Willa, Lily, and Alec were outside waiting for us. I marched over to my mate and locked her into an embrace that I was unsure if I'd ever be able to release her from. She snuggled up to me. "See Nate, it worked out." She was smiling. "But the hunters!" My anxiety wasn't gone yet. "We already have them in the palm of our hands." "Who?" I asked. She smirked and said "Me and Lily of course."
I kept waiting for the hunters to try to kill us. That is supposed to be their overall goal: terminate werewolves. They were there at the clearing but suddenly they weren't. Did they happen to also be ninjas? What kind of game were they playing with us? "Come Mate, we have a peace meeting to attend to." Willa grabbed my arm. "What meeting?" I asked gruffly. "To discuss peace with the hunters of course," Lily said nonchalantly. I glared at them both. "What are you women playing at?" Lily giggled, "You will see soon enough, Daddy."
