    Damien blinked. "Explain?" he said, raising an eyebrow.     "We dated for a while. That was fine. But I knew -- knew -- that whenever I was deployed, he was seeing other women. He had a whole string of them following him around." She let out a bitter laugh. "Yet, he wanted to marry me." She sniffed. "Every time he asked, I'd say no. Or I wouldn't answer.
