Gifty noticed first.
“Girl, this boy is obsessed with you,” Gifty said while they were washing plates in Vivian’s kitchen.
It was true.
He texted every hour.
Good morning. Have you eaten? What are you wearing? I miss you. Where are you?
If Vivian didn’t reply within ten minutes, he would call. If she didn’t pick up, he would call Gifty.
One evening, Vivian was studying for her Health Informatics examination. Biostatistics was giving her a hard time.
She put her phone on silent and focused.
For two hours, she didn’t check it.
When she finally looked, there were eighteen missed calls.
Twelve were from him.
Six were from an unknown number.
Then she saw a message from Gifty:
Girl, your boyfriend is at your gate o. He says you’re not replying.
Vivian ran to the gate.
He was there at 9 p.m. with a small speaker and his duffel bag, breathing hard.
“You didn’t reply,” he said. His eyes searched her face. “I thought you were angry with me. I thought you regretted meeting me at the airport.”
Vivian’s heart broke.
“I’m not angry. I was just studying. Look.”
She showed him her notes.
He held her close at the gate.
“Then let me stay while you study. I’ll be quiet. Just let me be near you. I can’t stay at home when you’re not replying. I go crazy.”
That night, he sat on the floor of her small room while she studied.
He didn’t disturb her.
He just watched.
Every ten minutes, he would whisper, “You’re so beautiful when you’re serious.”
Vivian would blush and forget her formula again.
He was obsessed.
And deep down, she was obsessed too.
