The park is quiet. Too quiet. The only sounds are distant cars and the soft crunch of our shoes on the gravel path. Neither of us talks as we walk deeper into the dark. I feel Zane’s eyes on us from the car. His headlights cut through the night like he’s waiting for something to happen. My heart won’t stop racing. Cade and I stop under a streetlamp. The yellow light makes his face look tired. Sad, even. It’s still so weird seeing him here in New York. He doesn’t belong. He looks like someone dropped a wild animal in the middle of a busy city. He just stares at me like he’s scared I’ll disappear again. “Thanks,” he says finally, voice low. “For not letting them throw me in jail back there.” I cross my arms and nod. “Thanks for saving me from that car. I froze. If you weren’t there...”
