Chapter Fourteen As the float plane landed and docked, the sun had already gone down. Billy Jo was sitting in the passenger seat beside the pilot, wearing a headset. Mark had given the seat up to her, hoping it would make her feel better, and sitting in back gave him a minute to wrap his head around this nightmare. How many kids from the island had disappeared? He stared at the text on his phone from the detective in San Antonio. It was worse than he’d thought, and he didn’t want to tell Billy Jo anymore. Was this what his dad had meant when he said that sometimes a man had to carry the weight of something alone to protect his family? The pilot was now shutting off the noisy float plane and stepping out his side door. Billy Jo glanced back to him in the dark and lifted off her headset,
