Chapter 29: Doubts Return

390 Words
That night, Amara couldn’t sleep. She lay in her bed staring at the ceiling while the quiet sounds of the dormitory filled the room. Every time she closed her eyes, the same thought returned. Emily might be going to the same program as Daniel. She turned to her side and sighed. “Why didn’t he tell me earlier?” she whispered. Maybe Daniel truly believed it didn’t matter. But to Amara, it mattered a lot. The past between Daniel and Emily was not something she could easily forget. --- The next day, the campus felt unusually tense for her. During her lecture, Amara tried to concentrate on the professor’s explanation, but her mind kept drifting away. After class, she walked outside and saw Daniel waiting near the entrance. He waved when he saw her. “Amara.” She walked toward him slowly. “Hi.” Daniel noticed the tired look on her face. “Did you sleep at all last night?” he asked. “A little,” she replied quietly. Daniel sighed. “You’re still thinking about Emily, aren’t you?” Amara didn’t answer immediately. Then she said softly, “Can you blame me?” Daniel rubbed his forehead. “Amara, I told you before. My past with Emily is over.” “I know,” Amara said. “But if she joins the same program as you… you’ll be around each other every day.” Daniel looked frustrated. “I can’t control who gets accepted into the program.” “I’m not asking you to,” Amara replied calmly. “Then what do you want me to do?” Daniel asked. Amara paused. That question was harder to answer than she expected. Finally she said, “I just want to know that I can trust you.” Daniel looked at her seriously. “You can.” “Then why do I feel like everything is becoming complicated again?” Amara asked. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The wind moved softly through the trees nearby. Daniel finally said quietly, “Because we’re letting the past control our present.” Amara looked down. Maybe he was right. But trusting someone wasn’t always easy—especially when doubts had already begun to grow. And somewhere on campus, another person was quietly watching the distance forming between them. Emily. 💔📖
