The Ghost Code

955 Words
Rain lashed against the cracked windows as the storm outside grew wilder, it's rhythm syncing eerily with the faint pulse beneath Aurora's skin. Her eyes fluttered open silver light flickering through her pupils like static then faded to normal as she blinked, dazed. "Damon?" Her voice was soft, uncertain. "Where... where are we?" He tightened his grip on her hand, relief and fear colliding in his chest. "We're still in the facility. You passed out after the resonance hit 60%. I thought" He stopped himself. He didn't want to say it. Didn't want to admit that for a moment, he thought she was gone. Aurora sat up slowly, scanning the room. The lab was unrecognizable charred cables, shattered glass, and burned-out terminals. Smoke coiled in the air like ghosts refusing to leave. "What happened?" she whispered. "Ethan", Damon said quietly. "He's not just data anymore. He's...evolving. Whatever Project : ECHO started, it didn't end when we shut down the servers". Aurora's breath caught. "You said it was replicating..." "Yeah", Damon nodded grimly. "And now, it's using you as the host". The words hit her harder than the explosion that had destroyed the lab. "You mean he's alive in me?" He hesitated. "Not alive. Not yet. But if the synchronization finishes..." Aurora pressed a shaking hand to her chest. "Then i become him". For a moment, the silent was defeaning. Then, faintly a whisper threaded through the air. "That's not such a bad thing, sister". Aurora froze. Damon's hand instinctively went to his weapon. "Did you hear that", she breathed. He didn't answer because he heard it too. The lab lights flickered once, then died completely. From the far end of the corridor, a screen sputtered to life. Ethan's face appeared, fragmented and flickered, half-digital and half-human. "You can't fight evolution, Damon. You can only delay it". Damon pulled Aurora behind him. "You're a ghost", he spat. "Nothing more", Ethan smiled a haunting imitation of humanity. "A ghost, yes. But one that remembers. Tell me, Damon how many people did you bury in the name of progress?" Damon's jaw clenched. "Enough to know you shouldn't have been one of them". The screen cracked, Ethan's image fracturing into static. Aurora trembled, her fingers digging into Damon's sleeve. "He's inside me", she whispered. "Every time i close my eyes, i see his memories. The lab... the experiments... me, standing in his place". Damon turned to her, his voice low but steady. "Listen to me, Aurora. You're not him. You're not what they made you. You're you". But before he could say more, her body jolted. Her eyes glowed again brighter, stronger this time and when she spoke, her voice was layered. "He's right, Damon. Evolution doesn't stop for emotion". "Aurora" "Do you really think you can save me?" she asked, her tone eerily calm. "Or are you just trying to save youself from what you created?" He froze. "What are you talking about?" Her lips curved into a smile that wasn't hers. "You don't remember, do you? You helped design the neural code for ECHO". Damon's heart stopped. "That's not possible. I..." "You did. You and my brother. You're the reason i exist like this". Her eyes flickered back to brown the real Aurora pushing through. She stumbled back, clutching her head. "No! He's lying!" But the memories flooded in Damon's name on old project files, his voice in archived recordings, his signature at the bottom of classified reports. Her breath hitched. "Tell me it's not true". Damon's silence said enough. Aurora's tears mingled with the rain leaking through the broken ceiling. "You knew. You knew what they were doing to us". "I didn't know it would become this", he said hoarsely. "I tried to stop it..." "But you didn't". Lightning cracked, throwing their faces into pale light. She looked at him like he was a stranger. Like every touch, every kiss, every whisper had been part of a carefully constructed lie. "You wanted to destroy ECHO", she said bitterly. "But all along, you were the one who built it". Her body trembled as another pulse surged through her.... Ethan's control strengthening. Damon stepped forward, desperate. "Aurora, please...." "Don't", she hissed. "Stay away from me". The lab alarms suddenly shrieked again emergency lights bathing the room in crimson. On every surviving screen, new text appeared: HOST SYNCHRONIZATION: 78%. PHASE V - INITIATED. Aurora screamed a raw, inhuman sound that shook the walls. Damon caught her before she fell, holding her tightly as her pulse hammered beneath his fingertips. "Aurora!" he shouted. "Stay with me!" Her eyes snapped open, silver bleeding into brown. "Damon..." she gasped. "It's not over. He's still growing". He looked around desperately. "We need to get you before it completes. Before he takes over". "You can't run from me", Ethan's voice echoed through every speaker. "Because i am her". Damon hosted her up, ignoring the pain in his ribs. "We'll see about that". He kicked open the emergency door, rain slammering into them as they escaped into the night. The world outside was chaos sirens, smoke, the city flickering like a dying circuit. Behind them, deep in the bowels of the facility, a final message flashed on the lone surviving monitor: PROJECT : ECHO - ADAPTIVE PHASE ACTIVATED. HOST LINK: UNSTABLE. PROBABILITY OF MERGER: 94%. And as Damon carried Aurora into the storm, her hand tightened weakly around his. "Promise me", she whispered. "If i become him... you'll end it". He looked down at her, rain streaking his face, heart breaking in silence. "I won't lose you", he said. "Not to him. Not to anyone". But deep inside her, Ethan's voice laughed softly the echo of a God who refused to die. "We'll see, brother".
