Chapter 14: Who Sent You

Her eyes searched my face, and I could see her trying to read between the lines. Celeste was intelligent to know that there was something going on that I wasn't letting her know of, but she was cautious enough not to prod further
"I love you," I said suddenly, the words sounding both natural and surprising to me.
Her breath caught and her eyes widened and for a moment I saw that same mixture of hope and fear that had been in her eyes at the hospital.
"I love you too," she whispered, as if the moment might be broken if she said it too loud.
I kissed her then, slow and deep, trying to memorize the wash she tasted and the way she fell into my hands. When we broke apart, I rested my forehead against hers as we breathed heavily.
