Wishing Upon A Wolf

Chapter 1: Birthday

"Aria, wake up you're going to be late for school!" is the first thing I hear from my mother, Luna Calliope. Happy birthday to me, I guess, but at least today is finally the day I get to meet my wolf. I also get to receive my high school diploma and find out if I got accepted into Law school the way I planned.

As I was getting ready, I heard 'Happy Birthday Aria'. I turned around thinking someone might have snuck into my room while I was in my closet getting dressed, but there was no one there. 'My name is Rosina your wolf'. I finally realized who was speaking, and I let out a happy squeal. I could not believe that she was here!

My day just got much better and I haven't even left my room yet, and I know once I make it downstairs my mood will be ruined, but I can enjoy this moment for a bit longer. That is when my stomach decides it is time to head down to get breakfast before I need to get to school.

I walked into the dining room and saw that it was already busy with the warriors coming off shift and classmates that live in the pack house were also there, and my family were already seated at the head table. I go to my seat, which is on the left side of my father and across from my mother. They all say their usual 'good mornings' and continue eating as if it was just any ordinary day which I already expected would happen.

'You have me now, and I will always remember your special day', Rosina says to me, which causes me to smile while I begin eating.

"What are you so happy about? It's Monday the worst day of the week", my sister Janessa decides to say.

"Nothing, I just have a good feeling" I respond, and she just rolls her eyes and continues to eat while texting on her phone.

Once I am finished eating I get up say goodbye and walk out the door. Already waiting is Lazarus my best friend and also the Betas second born son. We have been best friends our whole life, and I have been in love with him for half of it. Does he know? Absolutely not and I fully intend to keep it that way, but deep down I keep wishing that he will be my goddess given mate.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" screams Lazarus as I open the passenger door to get in, "Thank you, but geez tone it down a bit I would prefer not to go deaf on my birthday, ya know?" he laughs at my response and just winks at me.

Lazarus is seventeen and a senior. He is the only one aside from my teachers and the principal that knows I graduate today. He turns eighteen tomorrow and gets to find his mate. It is not something I enjoy thinking about, but I know the moment he does my heart will be crushed.

"Are you excited to meet your wolf tonight?" Lazarus asks and breaks me out of my thoughts.

"Absolutely! I have been dreaming of this day for as long as I can remember." I tell him.

"Would you like me to be there?" he follows up to his previous question.

Right when I am about to tell him yes Rosina chimes in 'You must be alone when you shift' immediately taking away my smile, "I think I want to experience this alone, goddess knows my family won't be there" I say which makes Lazarus frown but he does not respond.

Once we pull into the parking lot of the high school he puts the car in park and turns to look at me, "Well since I won't be with you when you shift, can I at least take you for some ice cream after?" this causes me to smile "Of course how could I ever say no to that?" He laughs and ruffles my hair as we get out of the car.

"It is finally your last day and possibly your ticket out of here for a while, you excited?" Lazarus asks as were walking through the parking lot.

As much as it makes me sad to think about leaving him, I know it is what I need to avoid the heartache I will face when he meets his mate and, honestly, to get away from my family until I am due to take over the pack.

"I am, but I will miss you while I am gone." He smiles at my reply and throws his arm over my shoulders as we walk into the school and for me, this will be the last time...
