Chapter 1

Late. On my first day, I was late. God only knew how hard I worked to get to where I was at today. And I was f*****g late. I flew through the entrance doors, waving at passers nearby. A few of them flashing a forced smile that appeared to be confused or embarrassed. I shrugged it off without another thought before making my way to the security line. 8:30. Come on, come on. You can make it. I say to myself. It was 8:24 AM giving me 6 minutes to make my way up to the conference room to meet my boss. I was never late to anything in life! Maybe a dance rehearsal in the 5th grade, but wasn't everybody? I stepped up to the security belt setting both bags into the plastic bins. I snapped my watch off and undid my belt, setting them in the bins as well. "Step forward." Harold. One of the security guards calls for me to walk through the metal detector. I sped through, getting a funny look from Harold. Why was everyone giving me wacky looks? I surely didn't look that disheveled. Right? Harold passes me along with a grunt, allowing me to grab my bags and accessories. Okay. Now the elevators. 8:27 AM. I could do this. But of course. Something HAD to go wrong or 10x slower when I was involved. 90 f*****g floors later, I zip out and head for Mandy's desk, the secretary with who I would be working closely with. "Good morning, Mandy. It's me. Josie. Josie Reid. Mr. Black's new assistant." I say huffing. All that running had taken a lot out of me. "I'm not late. I'm not late? Am I late?" I ask Mandy, who didn't take her eyes away from her computer screen. "Down the hall and to the right will be your office. Straight ahead is Mr. Black's. Don't forget to scan your badge." Mandy flips her red hair over her shoulder, almost scowling at me. She must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. I said to myself while making my way down to my new office. I gently pushed the door open to reveal a quite large room with white marble floors and a matching desk. The whole backside of the wall was replaced with a giant window, allowing the most gorgeous view of the city. New York was so pretty in the morning. I glanced at my watch to see it was exactly 8:30 AM. s**t! I needed to find the conference room and fast. Grabbing a notepad, I leave the beautiful office and peek around the corner to find two doors on opposite sides of each other. Conference room A. Conference room B. I shuffled over to one of the rooms peering into the small window on the door. Empty. I find around, opening the door to conference room A. All eyes turning towards my sudden noise. Why the f**k was everyone looking at me? Did I spill coffee on my shirt? I decided to speak out because it didn't look like anyone else was gonna help me out. "Uh. Is this the 8:30 AM Black meeting?" I ask. "That was rescheduled to Friday at 9:00 AM." A snobby-looking blond lady speaks up. She did not look happy to see me, as well as the rest of the building. I nod awkwardly and step out of the room. Well, that wasn't embarrassing at all. Not! I mentally curse myself, walking as fast as I could back to my new office. Maybe I could find something quiet to do for today. That would keep me out of peoples ways and— I clash into a hard, muscular body. Almost knocking me to the ground, I turn around furious to meet the— very hot asshat who bumped into me. "Watch it, asshole! I'm already on edge today." I maneuver around the stranger, bee-lining it to my office. This day was so f****d I'm so many ways already. I wished there was a big fat reset button I could press so I could start the day over. I spent the entire day inside my new office admiring it and decorating it will cute little things I had in my work bag. It wasn't until I got a call from Mandy that I stopped fiddling with the files on my computer. "This is Reid," I say, waiting for Mandy to talk. "Mr. Black would like to meet you." She said. "Okay, tell him I'll be—" A minute later the tone of the phone rang. Did she just. She just hung up on me! For some reason, Mandy was already getting on my nerves. And I had no idea what I even did to deserve her cold shoulder! Pushing my poses off thoughts to the back of my head, I stand from my chair to straighten my black skirt and blazer. I was going to meet my boss. I had to look professional. This was a once-in-a-lifetime offer, and I was not going to mess it up. My heels clicked through the hallway as I made my down to Mr. Black's office. I topped in front of his door taking a deep breath. Everything was going to be okay. I thought to myself. On the left side of the wall next to his office doorway a good plaque that read, Maddox Black, CEO, FOUNDER The stupid gold plaque only intimidated me more. Maybe the guy was a softie. He would gently let me go and say that he needed someone to be more on time to work. I would actually be okay with that! Because I was almost 100% sure everyone in this building hated me already. I rap my knuckles lightly on the door, waiting for a response. "Come in." I hear on the other side of the door. The door creaks open, letting me into an identical office, only bigger, with a dark oak desk that sat symmetrically with the rest of the furniture in Mr. Black's office. "Hi, there. You wanted to see me?" I squeaked. Preparing for the inevitable. Mr. Black stood staring out one of the windows. His back towards me. The windows were set up just like mine, except they lined the entire office, providing excellent natural lighting from the misty New York morning. Turning around I came face to face with— Was that? No. It couldn't be. Oh, but it was! My subconscious pitched in. The man who stood in front of me, my boss, Mr. Black was the gorgeous stranger I had ran into this morning while coming from one of the conference rooms. Could this day get ANY worse? Clearing his throat, Mr. Black says, "Good morning, Ms.?" "Reid." I choke. "Ms. Reid. Lovely to meet you." Flashing me knowing smirk at me, I couldn't help but watch his gaze wander up my body before stopping at my chest. Mr. Black's smirk grew while shifting his gaze back down to some paperwork that was on his desk. "Uh, Ms. Reid. You may want to adjust your, uh, blouse." He chuckles. What the hell was he talking about? Slapping a hand over my breasts, I turn on my heel making a straight line to the restroom. One look in the mirror explained it all... You could see my hot red, lacy bra through the white sheer blouse I was wearing clear as day. Correction: This day COULD get worse. And it was.
