Chapter 8: Unbothered and Unexpected Invitations

590 Words
The halls of Ravenswood Academy buzzed with students chatting and laughing. Remi and Avery walked side by side, their designer handbags swinging from their shoulders. Spotted: Remi, socialite sweetheart, looking effortlessly chic in her white blouse and black skirt. But is she hiding something behind that unbothered facade? As they approached their lockers, Lila sauntered up, a sly grin spreading across her face. "Hey, Remi, I heard The Insider has some juicy gossip on you. Care to comment?" Remi's expression remained neutral, her voice dripping with nonchalance. "I have no idea what you're talking about, Lila. But hey, if The Insider wants to waste their time on me, that's their prerogative." Avery watched the exchange, impressed by Remi's cool demeanor. She knew Remi was freaking out on the inside, but she'd never show it. Meanwhile, Avery had a mission of her own. She slipped away from Remi and Lila, making her way to a quiet corner of the school. She pulled out her phone and dialed a number, her eyes scanning the area to ensure she was alone. But the person on the other end didn't pick up. Avery's brow furrowed in frustration as she left a voicemail. Just then, Remi appeared beside her, a curious expression on her face. "Hey, who were you just calling?" Avery's eyes darted around, her voice taking on a slightly guilty tone. "Oh, just...my mom. Yeah, that's it." Remi raised an eyebrow, but her tone remained casual. "Cool. I was just looking for you. We have a free period next, want to grab some coffee?" Avery's shoulders relaxed, grateful that Remi hadn't pushed the issue. "Sounds good to me." As they walked to the cafeteria, Julian Styles caught up to them, his eyes locking onto Avery's. "Hey, Avery. Can I talk to you for a minute?" Avery's heart skipped a beat as Julian's charming smile made her feel like she was the only person in the room. "Sure, Julian. What's up?" Avery asked, trying to sound nonchalant despite the butterflies in her stomach. Julian leaned against a nearby locker, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I was wondering if you'd like to grab dinner with me tonight? I promise I'm not as boring as I seem." Avery's eyes widened in surprise, a teasing grin spreading across her face. "Oh, wow. The mighty Julian Styles has deemed me worthy of his presence. I'm flattered." Julian chuckled, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Hey, I'm not that bad. And I promise, I'll make it worth your while." Avery's cheeks flushed, but she couldn't help but be drawn to Julian's charming banter. "Okay, fine. But just dinner. Don't get any ideas." Julian's grin turned triumphant. "I wouldn't dream of it, Avery. I'll pick you up at 7?" As Julian walked away, Avery turned to Remi, a dazed expression on her face. "What just happened?" Remi's eyes sparkled with amusement. "I think Julian Styles just asked you out on a date. And you said yes." Avery's cheeks flushed, but she couldn't help the excitement that bubbled up inside her. Maybe this was exactly what she needed – a distraction from the drama that seemed to follow her everywhere. But as she glanced around, she couldn't shake off the feeling that someone was watching her. And she had a feeling that this was only the beginning of a very complicated game. Spotted: Avery, socialite darling, accepting a dinner invitation from Julian Styles. But what secrets is she hiding behind those piercing green eyes? Stay tuned, darlings...Hearts & Hellos, The Insider.
