Chapter 9: Help From an Old Friend

1067 Words
Stumbling out after taking a piss, my eyes were glazed over from the liquor. The nightclub was packed, and my vision was blurry. Suddenly, I saw a group of men in blue shirts and short sleeves. They looked vicious, and they were pulling out gleaming machetes and axes from their sleeves, charging right towards me! I immediately recognized them—they were Green Gang thugs! They scanned the dance floor and then rushed like a whirlwind toward the table where Ah Yi and Ah Ho were sitting! Ah Yi and Ah Ho, completely oblivious, were still happily humming along to the song Dreaming of Hong Kong (****), arms around the dance girls! “Ah Yi! Ah Ho! Run!” I yelled at the top of my lungs! Ah Yi and Ah Ho froze, snapped their heads back, and saw a horde of blue-shirted men hacking wildly at them with axes and machetes! Ah Ho took an axe-blow to his back, stumbled, and collapsed onto the sofa. The two dance girls beside them screamed in terror! Ah Yi snapped sober. He grabbed a wine bottle from the table and hurled it at the attackers! I instinctively reached for my waist but found nothing—empty! We had been checked by security when we took the ferry from Tai Wan Shan to Wan Chai via the Western District Pier, and all our weapons were at home! What the hell were we going to do? I had no choice but to wade in. I delivered a flying kick from behind, knocking one of the thugs to the floor! I lunged forward, wrestled him, twisted his wrist, and tried to snatch his axe! Ah Yi and Ah Ho grabbed fruit plates and wine bottles to defend themselves, but they were cut down onto the floor, the sofa overturned. The scene was pure chaos! The three of us were scrambling. I managed to seize the axe from the thug, swinging it like a wind wall to cover Ah Yi and Ah Ho! “Get out!” I shouted. The dance floor was a mess of screaming people! Looking behind us, more blue-shirted guys were swarming, blocking both exits! “You three cubs dared to chop up my Green Gang Young Master Wong! Today, you pay with your lives!” The attackers roared as they charged toward us! We instantly regretted our decision. If we had stayed in Tai Wan Shan, none of this would have happened. It looked like we were going to die here tonight! The three of us roared back. Even if we died today, we would fight to the bitter end—we’d face the Yama King with our heads held high! We swung wine bottles and the axe wildly, our clothes quickly turning into blood-soaked rags! Just then, another group of men burst onto the dance floor. Seeing the m******e, they immediately started yelling at the attackers! It was the security crew for the Celeste Nightclub—Sun Yee On men! “Ah Ching-Mian (Blue Face)! Help us!” Ah Yi screamed, shouting his name. The leader of the Sun Yee On group was a short, stocky guy with a pale face. Seeing Ah Yi calling for help, he immediately charged forward with his men! The Sun Yee On crew numbered over twenty. They swarmed the Green Gang thugs, pulling out their own big kai shan (machetes) and hacking away! With the reinforcements, the tide instantly turned! Ah Ho wiped his back, his hand coming away covered in blood. “You pok gai! You dared to cut me? I’ll cut you back!” he cursed. He grabbed a thug and smashed a wine bottle over his head, then yelled, “Sun Yee On brothers! Toss me a weapon!” Ching-Mian quickly threw a machete to Ah Ho. Ah Ho, now fighting like a maniac, started chopping wildly at the Green Gang men! Ah Yi and I also lunged back into the fray, hacking away! The Green Gang forces were being beaten back, bodies falling everywhere. Seeing the three of us fighting like tigers, plus the added help from the Sun Yee On men, they realized the situation was hopeless and immediately retreated downstairs! We chased them all the way down, hacking from the second floor to the ground floor. Several Green Gang members were left bleeding on the floor, staggering. Only a few quick ones managed to escape down an alley on Wan Chai Road; the rest were left cut down and barely alive! It was only after we were sure they were gone that the three of us stopped, panting heavily, finally relieved. Looking down, we were covered in blood and cuts, making it hard to tell whose blood was whose. “Ah Ching-Mian, thanks!” Ah Yi thanked the guy who had come to help. “No worries, man! We’re just the security here. Our Boss told us to chop those Green Gang bastards whenever we see them! Besides, you’re my good brother, Ah Yi!” Ching-Mian replied. Ching-Mian and Ah Yi were old friends. Back at the Kowloon City gambling den, Ching-Mian had lost everything, and Ah Yi lent him five thousand dollars to get back on his feet—a favour Ching-Mian had never forgotten. “Brother, even though we’re different Societies, I won’t forget this kindness. Just let us know if you ever need anything!” Ah Ho and I also quickly thanked Ching-Mian. “Don’t mention it! I know who you are. Chung Sai-Man, the guy who chopped up Wong Yuen-Ban in Lei Yue Mun! You’re famous lately!” Ching-Mian grinned. He said he’d only heard the name but was impressed to meet me in person. He praised the three of us, saying the ferocious fight just now proved we were as legendary as the rumors claimed—fierce and ruthless! “Alright, let’s not talk too much. We’ll meet again! Now, you guys have to bolt. The Green Gang and the cops are definitely coming back. Don’t stay here!” Ching-Mian warned. The cops would arrive soon, and likely the Green Gang would return with a larger force. By staying, we would just cause more trouble for Ching-Mian and Sun Yee On, so we had to leave immediately. We left the cleanup to Ching-Mian. The three of us thanked him again and left Wan Chai.
