Richard walked down the hall, flanked on both sides by werewolves of his pack. Alpha Carson, Arla’s father, welcomed him and led him to a special seat arranged just for him. They all laughed and drank. Arla, who was nearby, was so excited.
She looked around the hall, searching for one particular figure. When she couldn’t find her, she frowned and cursed inwardly.
“Where’s that good-for-nothing girl? I want to see how she reacts after her man is declared as my fiancé,” she thought with a smirk. Nothing would satisfy her more than tormenting Melissa day by day.
She used to be an ordinary person in the pack. Her father, who was quite reputable, had sent her to follow Melissa, the only child of the Alpha. She always felt resentful, thinking about how she was forced to follow her around. But when she met Richard, she fell for him. She never imagined that one day, he would be hers. Her body shook with excitement, thinking about the announcement that would follow today's celebration.
At that moment, Alpha Carson stood up and walked to the center of the hall. Everybody watched him intently.
“Today, during this joyful occasion, I want to announce some very important and good news. My daughter Arla and Richard Connor, Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack, are going to perform the Moon Tie Ritual today.”
“What?!”
Everyone turned to see who had dared to interrupt the Alpha.
“How dare a lowly Omega like you interrupt the Alpha?” one of the Gammas, Antonio, scolded.
Melissa ignored him. She was staring straight at Richard, who now shifted uncomfortably. Everyone watched the drama unfold.
“How could you...” Melissa couldn't complete her sentence. She felt shattered. Her heart beat quickened. A sharp, piercing pain of betrayal struck her. This was worse than anything she had suffered in the last two years.
What she shared with Richard went beyond an arranged marriage. They were childhood friends, bonded deeply. They had grown up loving each other, and after their engagement, their love only deepened. They had promised to always be there for one another.
The last time she saw him was during her parents’ burial. He had come to console her, telling her he would be gone for two years to undergo Alpha training. She had promised to wait for him until the day he returned.
She had been so determined to wait for her love that she endured all the maltreatment she received during those two years. She stubbornly faced the adversities and insults, all with the hope that one day, he would come back for her.
He would return to take her pain away, to make her officially his, to lift her from her misery, and to cherish her forever.
And now, here he was, about to perform the Moon Tie Ritual—a sacred engagement ceremony believed to bind the fates of two people. The same ritual he had performed with her a few years ago.
“Melissa,” he called out, his voice strained. He had always thought he could face this day easily, but he was wrong. His face turned pale. He knew he had gone too far, but even so, he had no regrets. What must be, must come.
“I know you feel betrayed and disappointed. It’s all my fault. I let you down. But... it can’t work out between us. Look at you. It’s been two years since your sixteenth birthday, and you still can’t even transform. That clearly shows your status as an Omega, and you’ll likely remain that way forever.
“Look at me—I’m an Alpha of a pack. How could my mate be a mere Omega? It’s unheard of. I love you, but I’m sorry, Melissa. As an Alpha, I can’t make decisions based on love.”
“So all the love and feelings we shared… all the time we spent together… all the promises we made… look me in the eye and tell me it meant nothing to you?”
Richard paused. He didn’t know how to respond.
Melissa used that moment to hug him tightly.
“Please, Richard. Think about it. Think deeply. I know this isn’t you.”
“Get away from my man, b***h!” Arla jumped between them and delivered a hot slap.
Pah!
Everyone gasped and started whispering. Melissa turned to Richard, expecting him to reprimand Arla. Instead, he hugged Arla.
“You shouldn’t have slapped her like that, sweetheart. She’s pitiful right now. Let her be.”
Melissa staggered. Was that all he could say? From the look of it, he didn’t even care about her.
“Melissa, go. From today onward, I, Alpha Richard Connor of the Silvermoon Pack, officially reject you as my mate.”
There was silence. Everyone gasped. The Alpha had officially rejected her. Everyone was waiting for her to break down and cry.
Instead, she laughed.
“You reject me today because I’m a useless Omega? I, Melissa Wilfred, promise you, Richard Connor—you will regret your decision.”
Everyone laughed. It was funny to them—an Omega challenging an Alpha, like an ant defying a lion. They were amused.
Alpha Carson didn’t want to give his guests a bad impression, especially since this was a sensitive matter. Otherwise, he would have had his wolves throw her out long ago.
Melissa left immediately after saying this. She didn’t even turn back. Richard frowned. He wasn’t pleased with the way she acted. He didn’t expect her to take it this easily.
How could this be possible? Based on how much she loved me and what I know of her, she should have thrown a huge tantrum and caused a scene. Has she changed that much?
He became troubled. Arla, who stood beside him, kissed his cheek and whispered, “Why are you so bothered by her? Isn’t she just some lowly Omega? Don’t tell me you still love her.” Her voice dripped with jealousy.
Richard laughed and held her tightly. Perhaps he was thinking too much. She was just a lowly Omega and didn’t deserve the attention of an Alpha like him.
His inner wolf sighed in disappointment.
