"He rejected me because he thought I'm an Omega?" Melissa laughed bitterly. Deep inside, she knew she wasn’t an Omega.
She could hear her wolf's furious cry—it was mourning the rejection. She tried her best to comfort it. If only her wolf were fully awakened, it could have communicated with Richard’s wolf and warned him not to make such a mistake.
Although a wolf's inner self can't directly control werewolves, it undeniably has a strong influence over them. It might have made a difference.
When she was sixteen, everyone patiently waited for her to awaken her wolf under the full moonlight, as per custom—but she failed.
This caused a wave of disappointment. Her parents were disappointed, the whole pack was disappointed, and even the ordinary Omegas were disappointed too. But she didn’t feel the weight of it. Why would she? Her parents were Alpha and Luna. Who would dare mock the Alpha’s daughter? Was that person tired of living?
A few days after her sixteenth birthday, she found out that she could faintly communicate with her wolf. When she told her parents, they were shocked and asked her to hide it and never reveal it.
This kind of thing had never happened before. They weren’t certain what it meant, so they asked her to keep it a secret until they could understand it. After all, it was still useless—she couldn’t transform.
But deep inside, she knew she wasn’t an Omega. She had a wolf, and her wolf would awaken one day. Melissa cried when she thought about all this. She might have appeared brave in the hall and held back her tears, but it was all just pretense. She was still a young girl. Her heart couldn’t bear the heartbreak.
"Lady Melissa, are you alright?"
She turned and saw Mara standing by the door, looking worried. She quickly wiped her tears and smiled.
Mara’s appearance struck a chord inside her. Honestly speaking, Mara was the only person who had stood by her from her better days to her worst without relenting. She still treated her like a princess and was always worried about her.
"I'm alright, Mara. No need to worry about me. Something got stuck in my eye, but I’ve removed it."
"Are you sure?" Mara looked at her suspiciously.
"I wasn’t around, but I heard what happened in the hall. Did that bad guy hurt you? I can’t believe he’s like this. He always looked so lovestruck before my lady, always swearing his love. I still can’t believe he was that quick to betray you."
She started crying too.
Melissa hugged her. The two girls held each other and wept.
Melissa gently pushed her away.
"Listen to me, Mara. I want to leave the pack."
Mara was alarmed. "But... the Alpha—he’ll never allow you to leave the pack."
"To hell with the pack. I plan to escape, and there’s no better day than today. I’m not forcing you to follow me. You can stay behind if you want."
"What are you saying, my lady? How could I ever leave you? I will follow you." She was resolute.
"But where do we go?" she asked.
"Anywhere. There’s a big city to the east—maybe we can go there first."
"Okay, my lady, I agree with you. But... there might be some warrior wolves guarding the pack. Are you sure we can get past them?"
"Don’t worry. There are only a few of them, and it’s not like the pack is that heavily guarded."
Indeed, the pack was never seriously guarded, even in normal times. If anyone ever dared attack the pack, the sentinel wolves would send a warning well before the enemy arrived. As for guarding against members of their own pack, such a thing had never been heard of.
A pack is like a big family, and everyone is deeply attached. Not even an Omega would leave the pack easily. But still, her situation was special—they might have increased security around her.
"Sister Melissa! Why can’t I find you in the hall?"
It was young Rowland. He was pouting. Mara was frightened. She looked like they had already been caught. She turned to Melissa and saw she was smiling instead.
When Melissa saw Rowland, she got an idea. She felt bad about using the little boy for her plan, but she wasn’t too worried. With Rowland’s position in the pack, the Alpha would never punish him, even if he did something wrong.
After a few minutes, she managed to convince Rowland. It wasn’t really difficult—their relationship was strong. She just had to offer to play with him all week long. He quickly agreed and ran off toward the pack entrance.
Two warrior wolves lay lazily under a tree, looking bored.
Young Rowland approached them. The two wolves were surprised.
"Young Lord? What are you doing here?" they asked, shocked.
"The Alpha wants you to attend the Moon Tie Ceremony now. He doesn’t want any wolf missing," he replied.
The two wolves glanced at each other.
"Why would he send you?" they asked, puzzled.
"He wanted to send an Omega, but I volunteered. I’m bored."
The two wolves hesitated, then decided to go. They didn’t want to offend the young lord, even though they doubted his words. It was better to check it out first. After all, there was no real loss. They weren’t worried that anyone would attack the pack—if any intruders entered, the sentinels would be the first to detect them.
And so, the two wolves left the entrance unguarded. It wasn’t the first time, so they weren’t too concerned.
They didn’t notice the two figures sneaking out through the entrance. The girls didn’t look back—they just hurried on.
"My lady, this is dangerous. The warrior wolves might come back soon when they realize they’ve been tricked. They might figure out something’s wrong."
"Just shut up and run!"
Melissa didn’t know what to tell her. This girl was a real chatterbox—still talking even in a situation like this.
