THE TESTS

522 Words
Breathless and terrified, the friends huddled inside a dusty toy store. The shelves were still lined with cracked dolls, rusted tricycles, and jack-in-the-boxes with twisted smiles. None of them spoke for a long time—each trying to make sense of what they had just seen. Then the lights flickered on. But not mall lights—these were dim, warm, and unnatural. The toy store looked brand new, polished and clean. Outside the glass walls, they saw children laughing, running past with balloons. A perfect mall from decades ago. But none of the people noticed the friends. “What the hell is happening?” Rohit whispered. A loud bell rang. Suddenly, the four were separated—pulled into different corners of the mall by an invisible force. Screaming each other’s names, they vanished into the illusion. Maya found herself in a nursery section. A crib stood in the center with a mobile spinning overhead. A voice echoed in her head: “Would you save a child you didn’t know?” The crib caught fire. A baby’s cries filled the room. She didn’t hesitate—rushing forward into the flames. When she reached in, it vanished—and the fire disappeared. Test one: Passed. Arjun stood in front of a broken elevator. Inside, an old man sat crying, his leg trapped. “Would you leave the weak behind?” the voice asked. Arjun ran forward, trying to lift the debris, ignoring the blood and his fear. The man vanished. Only a whisper remained: “Good.” Test two: Passed. Leena stood before a wall of mirrors. In each reflection, she saw herself stealing something—lying, hurting someone. “Are you who you pretend to be?” one mirror cracked. She clenched her fists, screamed, “I’ve made mistakes—but I’m not evil!” The mirrors shattered—and the darkness lifted. Test three: Passed. Rohit faced a hallway with shadows crawling along the walls. A frightened child appeared, begging for help. “Can you protect the innocent?” A dark figure lunged at the child. Without thinking, Rohit shielded them. The shadow dissolved. Test four: Passed. They were reunited—panting, shaken, but whole. Around them, the mall was dark once more. Then came a new presence. At the far end of the corridor, the temperature dropped again. Heavy footsteps echoed. A tall woman in a tattered, blackened dress emerged from the shadows. Her eyes glowed faintly, her long hair matted. She was sobbing. Behind her, the little girl appeared again—clutching her mother’s hand. "You’ve passed," the mother said, her voice like wind through broken glass. "Many come here with evil in their hearts. You… are different." “Who are you?” Maya asked softly. The woman looked at them with hollow eyes. “I am the mother of the child you saw. We were trapped here… long ago. Burned. Forgotten.” A door behind her creaked open—one that hadn’t been there before. “Help us finish this… and you may leave.” And then she vanished, leaving only the girl behind, staring. Waiting. To be continued…
