It’s been my experience that a word to the wise is seldom sufficient. People just can’t believe you’re serious, until you show them. Then it’s, “Why is he so mean?”

Alvin Jones was checking Wagner’s injury when he came to.
“Where am I,” Wagner said, groggily.
“You’re in my house, which we’ll have to leave,” Jones said. “You’ve really done it this time, Ted.” He shook his head.
“Done what?”
“Murdock has had it with you. He said that if he sees you…anywheres…you’re dead.” He offered Wagner some water.
He took a drink. “I’ve been threatened before.”
“You were out of it, so what was said was as much for me as it was for you. T’weren’t no threat. Felt more like a promise.” Jones finished packing. “So I’ve decided that we need to vacate the premise
