Chapter 4

Brian instinctively pulled his coat over his legs and growled angrily, "That's still better than you, coward! At least Cathy is willing to take the risk for me!" A flash of panic crossed Cathy's eyes as she stepped in front of Brian. "You don't know what you're talking about. Stop making things up! Instead of standing here running your mouth, why don't you figure out how to wake Charles up?" I simply smiled without saying a word and walked away with Ruth. Back in Charles's hospital room, the anesthesia still hadn't worn off. Just then, Maria sent me a message saying Cathy had already begun Brian's surgery. She still couldn't stop worrying about her son. Suddenly, there was movement from the hospital bed. I immediately stood up and walked over. When I saw the man on the bed slowly open his eyes, I couldn't hide my surprise. "Charles, you're awake?" "Lillian Nelson?" Charles blinked and softly called my name, his eyes fixed on my face. I froze for a moment. "You know me?" Before he could answer, Ruth rushed into the room. She was so overwhelmed that she couldn't get a single word out. She threw her arms around Charles, tears streaming down her face. Quietly, I slipped out of the room, leaving the two of them alone. The moment I stepped outside, Maria sent me a video. It showed Cathy preparing medication for Brian's post-op rehabilitation. Watching her fumble around in a panic was almost funny. I put my phone away. I couldn't help thinking about my previous life, when Brian had humiliated me over and over because of Cathy. I wondered whether, in this life, after losing his only chance to walk because of Cathy, he would still treasure her and dream of growing old together. Meanwhile, Charles faithfully followed every rehabilitation plan I gave him. Day by day, he started recovering. Before long, he was already walking on his own. Soon, the 10th day arrived, the day Cathy and I had agreed upon. Nearly every influential family in town gathered at the Miller family estate. After all, the entire upper class had been following our bet. When Charles and I walked into the banquet hall together, the guests erupted in shock. "Isn't that Charles? Am I seeing things? He actually woke up, and he's walking now?" "I bet five million on Cathy! I'm going to lose every penny!" "Dr. Nelson really deserves her reputation. She even brought Mr. Stone back from the brink of death. She's incredible!" The conversations around the room made Cathy's face turn deathly pale. She stared at me in disbelief. "You... you actually woke Charles up?" I let out a cold laugh. "You lost. It's time to honor our bet." Everyone immediately turned to look at her. "Miss Green, a bet is a bet. Kneel down and admit you lost to Dr. Nelson." "Come on, kneel already. After that, surrender your medical license." "You talked a big game before. Who would've thought Dr. Nelson would actually cure Mr. Stone?" Cathy looked nervously toward the second floor. Her eyes were filled with panic. "I..." Just as everyone was forcing her to kneel before me, a cold voice suddenly echoed from upstairs. "Who says we lost?" Everyone looked up. Brian was standing at the top of the staircase. Another wave of shocked gasps swept through the crowd. "Oh my God! Brian's legs are healed too?" "Looks like Cathy really does have some talent. Even Dr. Nelson said it couldn't be done, yet she actually pulled it off." Cathy lifted her chin proudly and looked at me with a smug smile. "See that? Brian is standing again!" Brian looked down at me from the top of the stairs. "You said no one could cure me. But here I am, standing right in front of you. Are you finally going to admit you're nothing but a fraud?" I slowly shook my head and let out a helpless sigh. "Brian, your legs could've been cured before. But now they're truly beyond saving." His expression instantly darkened. Grinding his teeth, he shouted, "Let's see how much longer you can keep pretending!" With that, he lifted his foot and started walking downstairs. I looked at him coldly. He was putting on a brave face, but his complexion was deathly pale. Cold sweat covered his forehead. Every step he took was shaky and unstable. Silently, I counted in my head. 'One. Two. Three...' Thud! His legs finally gave out beneath him. Brian lost his balance and tumbled all the way down the staircase.
