The night air felt heavy as Aurora returned to the mansion, her mind in turmoil. The forest had been quiet when she’d left, but now, the shadows seemed to hold secrets that she didn’t want to uncover. The strange man’s words rang in her ears, a constant reminder that there were forces beyond her understanding pulling at the threads of her life.
She’d barely stepped inside the mansion before the weight of Dante’s presence hit her. He was in the study, as always, working in isolation. She could feel his eyes on her from across the grand hallway, even though she couldn’t see him. His gaze was like a brand, hot and unyielding.
Aurora felt a flicker of defiance rise inside her. She wasn’t going to let him control her. She wasn’t going to be his pawn. Not anymore.
But as she walked toward the staircase, something stopped her. A voice. Soft, cold, and commanding.
“Where have you been?”
She froze.
Dante stood in the doorway to the study, his figure outlined in the dim light. He was watching her with a level of intensity that made her stomach tighten.
“Out,” she said curtly, refusing to meet his gaze.
“Out?” His voice was calm, too calm. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
She turned, facing him fully. “It means I needed some air. Is that a problem?”
“No,” he replied, taking a step toward her. “It’s not a problem. I just didn’t realize my wife was allowed to leave the house without permission.”
“I’m not your prisoner, Dante,” she shot back, her tone sharp.
“Not yet,” he said, his voice low, but there was an edge to it. “But don’t mistake me. You belong here. With me.”
Aurora felt the anger bubbling inside her, but she kept it under control. She wouldn’t let him see her vulnerable. Not again. Not like the night they were married, when he’d shattered every piece of her resolve.
“I don’t belong to you,” she said, stepping forward, her eyes locked on his. “Not in any way.”
He didn’t flinch. Instead, he took another step toward her, closing the distance between them. His presence was overwhelming, a suffocating force.
“No one is going to believe that, Aurora. Not after what’s happened.”
“What’s happened?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“The game has changed,” he said softly, a hint of something dangerous lurking beneath the surface. “And you’re going to have to learn the rules quickly, or you won’t survive this.”
She shook her head, unable to fully comprehend what he meant. “What are you talking about?”
“Let’s just say there’s more to you than meets the eye.” His eyes darkened, and for a moment, he seemed almost… afraid. “You’re not as innocent as you think you are.”
Aurora swallowed, a chill running down her spine. There was something he wasn’t telling her. Something he was hiding, and for the first time, she didn’t feel like she could trust him.
She stepped back, putting distance between them. “I don’t need your protection, Dante. I’m not some delicate flower that needs to be kept in the dark.”
“Maybe not,” he said, his voice growing cold again. “But you don’t have a choice in this.”
Before she could respond, a knock at the door interrupted them. Both of them turned toward it, but before Aurora could react, Dante was already walking toward the door, his steps confident, deliberate.
He opened it to reveal one of his men, his face grim. “There’s a problem.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed. “What kind of problem?”
“The kind you don’t want to deal with,” the man said. “But it’s already been taken care of. We’ve had an… unexpected visitor.”
Aurora felt her heart skip a beat. The man. The one who had spoken to her in the woods. He had followed her here.
“I’ll deal with it,” Dante said, his voice icy. “Get rid of him. And don’t let him get too close to her.”
The man nodded and left quickly, disappearing down the hall.
Dante turned back to Aurora, his expression hardening. “This is getting dangerous, Aurora. You’re getting involved in things you don’t understand.”
“You’re the one who pulled me into this mess,” she snapped. “I had no say in any of this.”
“I never said you did,” he replied, his voice low. “But I’m telling you now. The game is no longer just between us. There are people who want you. People who will do anything to get you.”
Aurora felt a shiver crawl up her spine. She wasn’t sure if he was trying to warn her or scare her, but either way, the message was clear.
She was in deeper than she ever realized.
