Chapter 4

Reese "Allistair Rusco? You're Mr. Rusco's son and our new CEO?" I exclaimed in disbelief. Why didn't it cross my mind that the stranger I married two days ago might be related to our former CEO? But even if it had, I never would have guessed he was the son of Rusco Global's CEO. "Are you really surprised?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. It was as if he didn't believe I didn't know he was the company's new CEO. "I really don't know." I shook my head. I worried he might think I'd planned everything and was just pretending to be ignorant. "Look, Mr. Rusco. I truly had no idea you'd be my boss. I was on leave for my wedding with my ex-fiancé, so I didn't know the company had a new CEO," I explained, my voice tinged with frustration. Because it was obvious from his face that he didn't believe me. "Fine. Whatever." Allistair shrugged. I grew even more annoyed. The doubt in his face didn't disappear. I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down. He was my boss now. If I made him mad, he might fire me right away. And if I kept insisting I was telling the truth, I'd only look guilty. "So what do you need from me, Mr. Rusco? Why did you call me here?" I asked him instead of pressing the issue. It was fine if he didn't believe me. We'd be getting a divorce in a month anyway, so he'd see I had no ill intentions toward him. Our meeting and my marriage proposal to him were purely accidental. He just happened to be the first man I saw when I walked out of the church to find a man whom I could ask to marry me, so I approached him. "I called you because—" The door suddenly swung open and cut him off. A beautiful blonde woman walked straight in and approached Allistair. "You took over your father's company and didn't even tell me?" she chided Allistair in a hurt tone, then raised an eyebrow as she looked at me and gestured with her chin as if I were an object. "Who is she? I don't like her. She looks like one of those women trying to seduce you." I couldn't help rolling my eyes. Who was this woman, talking as if she owned Allistair? Was she his girlfriend? But wait, if she were my boss's girlfriend, why did he agree to marry me? He could just introduce his girlfriend to his grandmother. Surely his grandma would stop pressuring him to marry someone else. "Don't talk to her like that, Sophia," Allistair said firmly, scolding the woman. "She's not like the women you're talking about. She was my—" "I'm Mr. Rusco's employee. My name is Reese Clifford," I quickly introduced myself to the woman named Sophia. I cut off Allistair's words because I was worried he'd say I was his wife. We were getting divorced in a month, so there was no need for anyone to know about our status, especially not this Sophia woman. She seemed like trouble. When I glanced at Allistair, his face suddenly tightened as if he didn't like what I'd said. "What is a mere employee doing in your office if she isn't trying to seduce you? Tell her to leave now. Don't let her come to your office again. I don't want to see her getting close to you or even talking to you," Sophia snapped in an extremely possessive tone. She must really be his girlfriend. A woman wouldn't speak like that to him if she weren't in a relationship with him. His taste in women was quite different. While most men look for gentle, submissive, and sweet girlfriends, his type seemed to be possessive and shameless. "She's my employee, Sophia. Why can't she come to my office when even you, who doesn't even work at the company, are allowed to walk into my office whenever you want? And besides, were discussing company matters when you came in. And next time you come here, learn to knock before entering. It's basic manners but you can't even do that." Allistair's words hit Sophia hard, and her face immediately soured as she shot me a sharp glare. "We're different, Allistair. I'm your—" "Alright. If you don't have anything important to say, you can leave my office now. You already interrupted the important matter we were discussing before you came in," Allistair suddenly dismissed Sophia. Sophia's frown deepened. She shot me one last glare before storming out of the office. "Aren't you going to follow your girlfriend and comfort her?" I asked Allistair, raising an eyebrow after Sophia left. Allistair stood up from his swivel chair and slowly walked toward me. "Why should I follow that woman?" he asked, his intense gaze fixed on me. "You're my wife, yet you referred to another woman as my girlfriend? And why did you stop me from telling her you're my wife?" I couldn't help but swallow hard because we were only an inch apart but he still didn't seem to plan on stopping. I had to step back until my backside hit the edge of his desk. He quickly planted both hands on either side of the desk, trapping me like a mouse cornered by a cat. I was caught between his arms. My heart skipped a beat when he slowly lowered his face. I couldn't meet his intense stare. I felt like he was reading even the deepest secret inside me so I closed my eyes and turned slightly to the side and placed my hands on his chest to keep him away. "Isn't she your girlfriend? She wouldn't act like that in your office if she weren't. Besides, I don't want anyone to know about us because we'll be getting a divorce in a month anyway. I don't want to have to explain to everyone why we're getting divorced. It's too much of a hassle," I explained hastily, feeling flustered. "Sophia isn't my girlfriend. She's just a childhood friend. Our families are close. And besides, I wouldn't have accepted your marriage proposal if I had a girlfriend," he corrected about his relationship with Sophia. It seemed he had no feelings for her. But the woman clearly had strong feelings for him. I face him and force a smile. "Okay. I believe you. Can you move away now? I can't breathe anymore." "It's okay if you can't breathe, I can give you mouth-to-mouth resuscitation right away," he whispered playfully in my ear, then gently blew on it. All the hairs on my body stood on end. A strange tingling sensation suddenly enveloped my body. What the heck! Sophia thought I was seducing Allistair, but she never would have guessed that this man was the one seducing me instead. I never imagined I'd marry someone so good at charming women.
