Chapter 6: The Council of Fangs

1099 Words
The tranquil isolation of the royal bedroom was shattered just after sunrise. The heavy obsidian doors were thrown open by four elite Royal Guards, their silver armor gleaming under the icy light of the high spires. High Alpha Daudi had already returned to his stoic, unyielding armor, the ancient runes on his neck glowing a low, steady violet. But the tension in his broad shoulders told Kisa everything she needed to know. The political storm High Lord Logan had promised had officially arrived. Kisa was marched out of the private suite, wrapped in her heavy fur-lined cloak with her tattered gray shawl tucked securely beneath it. She was led through the cavernous, white-stone corridors of the palace, her boots echoing against the pristine marble floors until they reached the grand double doors of the Council of Fangs. The doors swung open, revealing a massive amphitheater carved directly out of the mountain's black bedrock. Seated in tiered rows above were fifty of the most powerful, predatory High Lords and Lycan nobles of the Crescent Peak Kingdom. Their eyes glowed varying shades of amber and crimson in the dim torchlight, and their collective, dominant scents—sour adrenaline, woodsmoke, and raw hostility—made the air in the chamber suffocatingly thick. In the center of the floor stood an empty iron box, and right beside it was High Lord Logan, a triumphant, malicious sneer plastered across his scarred face. "Enter, High Alpha Daudi!" Logan’s voice boomed across the theater, dripping with mock reverence. "The council has gathered to address a severe breach of our ancestral blood treaties. You have brought a nameless, unverified human laborer into the royal inner sanctum to manipulate the crown's most sacred artifact—the soul-tether." Daudi strode into the center of the floor, his heavy leather boots thudding like thunder. He didn't bow to the council. He loomed over the room, his pitch-black eyes shifting into an absolute, murderous void. "My actions are my own, Logan. The survival of the throne is paramount, and my old vestment was failing." "Failing or not, the law is absolute!" Logan roared, turning to face the tiered rows of nobles. "Humans are servants, meant to provide standard textiles, not to weave the literal anchor of a King's sanity. For all we know, this human gutter rat is a spy from the southern resistance, spinning poison into your threads to turn our King rabid! I demand the human hand over the unfinished barkcloth immediately so our royal scholars can inspect it for sabotage." A low, collective rumble of agreement vibrated through the chamber as dozens of High Lords growled in approval. Kisa’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She stood just a few paces behind Daudi, her fingers tightening around the iron distaff hidden beneath her cloak. If they inspected the golden barkcloth with their magical scholars, they wouldn't find poison—they would find the dense, illegal layers of liquid stardust she had woven into the core. They would realize she possessed the forbidden "Spirit Tethering" magic. “When the wolves corner you, Kisa, do not act like prey,” Auntie Pinky’s fierce advice echoed in her mind from her days in the jungle workshop. “Wolves only respect the teeth that can bite back.” Before Daudi could speak, Kisa took a deliberate, firm step forward, stepping right out from behind the King's massive shadow. She threw back her gray shawl, revealing her sharp silver eyes and a face completely devoid of fear. "You wish to inspect my work, High Lord Logan?" Kisa’s voice rang out, remarkably clear, loud, and steady, cutting right through the low growls of the Lycan nobles. The entire assembly fell into a stunned, deathly silence. A human apprentice had never dared speak aloud in the Council of Fangs. Logan clenched his jaw, his amber eyes flashing with a dangerous fury. "Silence, human. You do not speak in this chamber." "I am the one holding the needle, which means my voice matters," Kisa countered, her chin lifting with an unshakeable, royal confidence. She gestured to the heavy mahogany box a guard was holding, containing her unfinished vestment. "You claim I am a saboteur. But if any of your royal scholars touch this golden barkcloth right now, their magic will clash with the volatile residual energy of High Alpha Daudi’s beast. The feedback will detonate the fabric, destroying the tether completely, and your King will turn feral before the sun sets today. Is that what you want, Lord Logan? To intentionally drive your King mad?" The accusation hit the council like a physical blow. The nobles began to whisper frantically among themselves, their suspicious gazes shifting from Kisa to Logan. Daudi turned his head slightly, looking down at Kisa over his shoulder. The bottomless black of his eyes swirled with a mixture of raw, possessive pride and profound, breathless awe. His human mate wasn't just hiding behind his shield—she was dismantling his political enemies with her own words. Daudi stepped forward, slamming his heavy, armored fist onto the council railing, cracking the stone. The dominant Alpha aura exploded from his chest in a massive, crushing wave of raw power that instantly forced every noble in the room to shut their mouths and drop their heads in submission. "The weaver has spoken the truth," Daudi’s deep baritone growled, his voice echoing like an earthquake through the bedrock. "The tether belongs to my beast, and my beast has already accepted her hands. The bond is sealed. If any man in this room attempts to touch her, or take her work, I will consider it an act of open treason against the crown." Daudi reached back, his large, calloused hand finding Kisa’s wrist. The moment his bare skin touched hers, a brilliant, visible spark of golden celestial light and violet shadow-magic shot between them, illuminating the dark chamber. He pulled her flush against his side, locking his arm securely around her waist in a display of absolute, terrifying possessiveness. "The trial is over," Daudi commanded, his black eyes locking onto a pale, trembling Lord Logan. "The weaver returns to my quarters. And if I see your shadow near my doors again, Logan, I will feed your heart to the feral packs." Without waiting for a response, Daudi turned and led Kisa out of the roaring silence of the council chamber, his vanguard forming a steel wall behind them. They had won the political battle, but as Kisa leaned into the intense heat of his side, she knew the lines of the true war were already being drawn.
