Chapter 10: The Looming Shadow

1225 Words
The morning air inside the royal master suite carried a new, profound clarity. For the first time since Kisa had been dragged to the northern mountains, the suffocating cloak of lies was gone. She stood before the grand mahogany loom, her hands moving with an unshakeable, fluid grace that felt entirely unburdened. No longer forcing her magic to hide within the deep grain, she allowed her celestial power to dance openly over the golden barkcloth. Laser-thin ribbons of liquid cosmic silver unspooled effortlessly from her fingertips, intertwining beautifully with the raw, sap-coated copper threads. The soul-tether was nearly three-quarters finished, vibrating with a dense, stabilized power that hummed a peaceful melody against her skin. Across the room, High Alpha Daudi watched her from his high-backed obsidian chair. He had finally put his heavy dark-iron armor back on, but his helmet rested on the floorboards beside him. The ancient runes winding up his throat and upper chest were no longer pulsing jaggedly or leaking black smoke; they glowed a steady, tranquil violet, perfectly anchored by the magical presence of his fated mate. His pitch-black eyes tracked every shift of her shoulders, every flicker of stardust passing through her hands, filled with a deep, unyielding possessiveness that made Kisa's chest feel pleasantly warm. "You have stopped fighting the mountain air," Daudi remarked, his deep baritone rolling smoothly through the quiet space. "I have stopped fighting you, Your Majesty," Kisa replied softly, a small, genuine smile gracing her lips as she pulled a fresh row of threads taut. "With your energy shielding me, the cosmic current is easy to guide. Your inner beast is incredibly cooperative when it isn't trying to tear down my workshop." Daudi let out a rare, low rumble that sounded dangerously close to a soft chuckle. He stood up, his massive, broad-shouldered frame casting an immense shadow as he walked over to her workspace. "My wolf only cooperates because he knows who holds his leash, little weaver. He has no desire to anger the woman weaving his sanity." He stopped right behind her, the magnetic warmth of his body instantly melting the morning chill from her skin. He reached around her waist, his large, calloused hand lightly resting on the frame of the loom, mere inches from her fingers. The fated mates bond hummed between them, a slow-burning fire that brought an intense sense of security to the room. The peaceful moment was instantly shattered by a frantic, heavy pounding on the grand obsidian doors. "High Alpha Daudi! Emergency protocol!" Commander Kato’s urgent voice barked from the corridor. Daudi’s posture transformed into that of a lethal predator in a fraction of a second. His black eyes shifted into two bottomless voids of absolute authority. "Enter!" he commanded, stepping back from the loom to shield Kisa with his immense frame. The heavy doors flew open, and Commander Kato, the head of the Royal Guard, rushed into the suite. His silver chestplate was dented, his breathing shallow and rapid, and the scent of ozone and burnt sulfur rolled off his armor. "Speak, Kato," Daudi snarled, his fangs elongating slightly as his inner wolf sensed immediate danger. "High Lord Logan has fled the capital, sire," Kato gasped out, clenching his fist against his chest in a hurried salute. "Just past midnight, he and his loyal pack forces executed a coordinated prison break. They breached the lower levels of the black dungeons. They slaughtered twelve of our elite guards and freed the southern human merchant, Silas." Kisa’s heart violently slammed against her ribs. Silas. If Logan had freed the corrupt merchant, it meant the blackmail was no longer just a private threat. Logan now had a living witness who could testify to the high council that the King's chosen mate possessed the forbidden, illegal Spirit Tethering magic. "That is not all, Alpha King," Kato continued, his face turning an ash-gray color under the torchlight. "Our scouts report that Logan has declared an open rebellion against the crown. He has used the merchant's testimony to convince three of the major northern packs that you have allied with a dangerous human witch to enslave the Lycan race. Right now, Logan is gathering a massive, rogue army at the northern borders. They are using forbidden blood-magic to induce a forced, permanent blood-frenzy in their wolves. They are marching toward the palace gates, sire. Ten thousand feral wolves are descending upon Crescent Peak." The revelation hit the room like a physical blow. Ten thousand blood-frenzied wolves would tear through the kingdom's outer perimeters like a wildfire, slaughtering human clans and loyal packs alike. "He is trying to provoke a war of thrones before the soul-tether can be completed," Daudi hissed, his jaw clenching so hard a low, primal growl rippled from his chest. The violet runes on his neck flared with a sudden, sharp intensity, reacting to the threat against his kingdom and his mate. He turned his terrifying, pitch-black gaze back to Kisa. Kisa didn't cower. She stepped out from behind his shadow, her silver eyes blazing with a fierce, kickass determination. She looked at her unfinished golden barkcloth on the loom. “When the storm breaks, Kisa, you become the anchor,” Auntie Pinky’s final training lesson echoed powerfully in her mind. "How long until their vanguard reaches the palace gates, Commander?" Kisa demanded, her voice ringing remarkably clear and steady. Kato looked at her in surprise, then glanced at Daudi, who gave a firm, approving nod. "Less than forty-eight hours, lady weaver. If the palace's ancient magical blood-wards fail, our remaining palace guard will be entirely overwhelmed by their numbers." "Then we have forty-eight hours to finish this vestment," Kisa said, turning her gaze directly to her Alpha King. She reached out, her smaller hands boldly grabbing his armored wrists, letting the liquid golden stardust of their bond flare visibly between them to calm his erratic magic. "I will not let Logan destroy what we are building, Daudi. I will weave day and night. I will tie your soul to this cloth, and together, we will defend this mountain." Daudi stared down at her, his dark voids swirling with an absolute, breathless adoration and fierce royal pride. He flipped his hands, his large fingers gripping hers tightly in an unbreakable promise. "Kato, mobilize the vanguard," Daudi commanded, his voice echoing like thunder through the suite. "Seal the perimeter. Prepare the archers on the battlements. We hold the lines at all costs. The High King does not retreat." "Yes, Alpha!" Kato roared, turning on his heel and rushing out of the suite, the grand doors slamming shut behind him. The room fell silent once more, but the air was now thick with the electric scent of an approaching war. Daudi turned back to Kisa, his large hands coming up to gently cup her face, his thumbs tracing her jawline with a heartbreaking tenderness. He leaned down, his forehead resting firmly against hers as their golden and violet magics beautifully intertwined. "If the wards fail, Kisa, my priority is your life," Daudi whispered, his rough voice tight with a fierce, desperate protectiveness. "I will send you back south with a full guard to Auntie Pinky." "No," Kisa whispered back, her lips brushing against his in a slow-burning, resolute promise. "My place is here, beside my King. We face this storm together."
