Chapter 13: The Two Battlefields

1117 Words
The roar of the battlefield below echoed through the shattered service doors of the royal master suite, a chaotic symphony of clashing steel, splintering wood, and the primal, agonizing howls of dying wolves. From her high vantage point at the obsidian window, Kisa watched in breathless awe as High Alpha Daudi dominated the central courtyard. Clad in the stardust-infused golden barkcloth vestment she had poured her soul into, he moved like a literal god of war. His movements were no longer clunky or restricted by the chaotic, choking black smoke of his old tether. He was fluid, supernatural, and devastatingly precise. Every swing of his massive obsidian broadsword unleashed a colossal wave of radiant golden stardust and deep violet shadow-magic, effortlessly cutting through High Lord Logan's blood-frenzied vanguard. He was an unstoppable wall of bone and steel, protecting the steps of his fortress with terrifying royal pride. But Kisa couldn't afford to watch him forever. Her body was completely spent, her muscles trembling with an agonizing fatigue, and her raw, bleeding fingertips throbbing with white-hot fire. She leaned heavily against the frame of her grand mahogany loom, trying to catch her shallow breath. “Never leave your back exposed when the pack is hunting, Kisa,” Auntie Pinky’s sharp warning from her early days in the southern jungle suddenly flashed through her mind, colder than the mountain wind. A sudden, sharp metallic scrape echoed from the back of the room. Kisa stiffened, her silver eyes violently snapping toward the small service door near the private bathing chambers. The iron latch—the one she thought had been securely locked after the Royal Guards dragged the black-market merchant away—was slowly, silently moving. Someone was picking the lock from the outside. With a sickening, heavy creak, the door swung open. Stepping out from the shadows of the bathing quarters was a figure covered in dried mud, blood-spatter, and a crazed, desperate expression. Silas. The corrupt merchant had escaped the lower levels of the black dungeons during Logan’s chaotic prison break, and instead of fleeing the mountain, his greed had brought him straight back to the top spire. In his right hand, he clutched a long, jagged iron dagger that gleamed maliciously under the blood-red moonlight filtering through the windows. "Did you really think those wolf cages could hold me, little Kisa?" Silas hissed in a low, breathless whisper, a terrifying, yellow-toothed grin spreading across his frantic face. He took a slow, predatory step into the room, his eyes darting to her raw, bleeding hands. "The whole palace is burning down below. Your monstrous King is too busy cutting heads off in the mud to save you now. You are my ticket out of this frozen hellhole." "Get out of here, Silas," Kisa whispered, her voice remarkably clear and steady despite the wave of terror crashing through her veins. She took a slow step backward, her hand secretly reaching out behind her back to search the mahogany worktable for any tool she could use as a weapon. Her fingers brushed against the cold, heavy iron handle of her weaving distaff. She gripped it tightly. "I’m not leaving empty-handed," Silas sneered, his amber eyes flashing with pure malice as he gestured aggressively with his blade. "High Lord Logan promised me a mountain of gold and a lordship in the southern outposts if I bring you to him alive. He wants your stardust magic, Kisa. He wants to chain you to a loom in his own vault to weave an army of indestructible wolves. If you come quietly, I won't have to break those pretty legs of yours." "I told you before, Silas," Kisa said, her chin lifting with that unyielding, fierce defiance that had tailed her Alpha King's beast. Her silver eyes blazed with a sudden, kickass determination. "There is no deal." With a desperate shriek of greed, Silas lunged across the open marble floor, raising his iron dagger to strike. Kisa didn't cower, and she didn't scream for help. She knew Daudi was fighting for his life downstairs, and she had to be her own protector. As Silas closed the distance, she violently spun her body around, swinging the heavy iron weaving distaff with every ounce of remaining strength she possessed. The heavy iron bar slammed directly into the side of Silas’s jaw with a sickening crack. The merchant choked out a spray of blood, his yellow-toothed grin instantly shattering as the force of her strike sent him stumbling violently sideways, his iron dagger clattering uselessly onto the floorboards. But Silas was fueled by raw desperation. He recovered quickly, wiping the blood from his mouth with a venomous snarl. He leaped forward again, using his superior physical weight to slam his body directly into hers. They crashed heavily onto the marble floor together, right by the grand hearth. Silas wrapped his rough, filthy hands around her throat, choking the air from her lungs as he pinned her down against the plush furs. "You human gutter rat!" Silas shrieked, his thumbs digging deep into her neck. "I'll drag your corpse to Logan if I have to!" Kisa choked, her vision blurring into dark spots as the air left her body. But she refused to give up. She stopped fighting his grip and instead unleashed the absolute depths of her forbidden gift. She opened her palms against the floorboards, reaching straight through the stone to tap into the ancient, radiant lunar magic pulsing deep within the mountain bedrock. Instantly, a brilliant, blinding explosion of liquid golden stardust and silver sparks violently erupted from her body. The raw, localized cosmic shockwave hit Silas like a physical battering ram. The merchant shrieked in absolute agony as the burning celestial light scorched his leather coat, throwing his grown frame entirely off her body. He flew ten feet across the bedroom, crashing violently against the heavy mahogany worktable before collapsing into a crumpled, unconscious heap against the wall. Kisa rolled onto her side, coughing violently as she dragged fresh air back into her burning lungs. She sat up slowly, her silver eyes wide as she stared at the unconscious merchant. The liquid golden sparks of her magic were still swirling beautifully around her frame, casting long, triumphant silhouettes against the white stone walls. She had held her own battlefield. Down below in the central courtyard, a massive, earth-shaking roar echoed through the valley. High Alpha Daudi had just cut through the last of the vanguard, his pitch-black eyes locking unerringly onto High Lord Logan at the edge of the royal steps. The final, brutal duel of thrones had officially begun, and both the weaver and her King were refusing to bow to the shadows.
