CHAPTER 4 – What the Flame Remembers The forest was unnaturally quiet. No birds. No wind. Even the insects had fallen silent. Kael stood just outside the shrine, grimoire slung under his arm, eyes scanning the tree line. > “Something’s coming,” he said. Behind him, Lira was sharpening a blackened dagger. > “Then stay close,” she replied. “You’re still too weak to burn anything that matters.” Kael scowled. > “I can handle myself.” > “I watched you collapse after three spells. Let’s not pretend you’re a god.” He didn’t respond. Not because she was wrong—but because she wasn’t. The Ashborn magic was strong—but it took its due. Each casting drained not just his body, but his identity. The more he used it, the more he felt like something else was growing inside him. Something with fangs and fire. --- 🌲 The Hunter Arrives The first sign was the smoke. Not drifting upward, but curling low across the ground — heavy, oily, unnatural. Kael stepped back. > “That’s not me.” Lira stood abruptly, eyes narrowing. > “Conclave magic.” From the shadows, a figure emerged — tall, cloaked in crimson, helm shaped like a dragon’s skull. In one hand, a staff of obsidian. In the other, a chain forged from glowing gold links that hovered without touching the ground. > “Ashborn,” the figure hissed. “By order of the Flame Conclave, surrender yourselves.” Kael felt the Codex tremble. > “He is Flamebound — once a priest, now a hunter.” “His fire is not holy.” “It is vengeance.” Lira stepped forward. > “You’ll find us hard to burn.” > “You won’t burn,” the hunter said, raising the staff. “You’ll bleed.” --- ⚔️ The Battle Begins The chain in the hunter’s hand snapped forward like a whip, cracking the air. Lira leapt aside, hurling a shard of ash-forged glass toward his chest. It struck—shattered harmlessly. > “Wards,” she muttered. Kael raised his hand, Ember Vein sparking through his skin. > “We’ll have to overload them.” The hunter didn’t wait. He slammed the staff into the ground. A ring of fire erupted outward, forcing Kael and Lira apart. Kael landed hard, coughing smoke. The hunter moved with terrifying speed—chain lashing, striking stone, melting roots. Kael barely dodged. > “Use the fourth spell,” the Codex urged. “Let him remember your flame forever." --- 🔥 Spell IV – Soulbrand (Temptation) Kael flipped the grimoire open. The page wasn’t blank. It had been waiting. > Ashborn Spell IV: Soulbrand Etch your enemy’s name into your flame. Let their soul burn where they cannot reach. A glyph shaped like a broken circle glowed with faint violet light. Kael touched it. He didn’t cast. Not yet. > “What does it cost?” > “Nothing you will miss.” He looked up. Lira was pinned against a tree, the hunter pressing the chain to her throat. She clawed at it, her arm glowing with the Ashborn sigil—but it wasn’t enough. Kael’s fingers closed around the glyph. > “I won’t lose anyone else.” And he spoke the name of the hunter. > “Tarn Velas.” --- 🩸 The Soul Burns The effect was immediate. The hunter screamed. He dropped the chain, staggered back, clutching at his chest. Smoke poured from his eyes, his mouth, his ears. Lira fell to her knees, coughing. Kael stepped forward. > “You’ll remember my name.” > “What name?” the hunter gasped. Kael’s eyes glowed. > “Kael Ashborn.” With a flick of his wrist, the fire consumed the glyph—and the hunter’s soul branded itself into Kael’s Codex. The man collapsed. Still breathing. But broken. --- 🧠 The Aftershock Kael fell to one knee. His heartbeat slowed. Then sped up. Then stopped for a second too long. He gasped, clutching his chest. The Codex hummed in satisfaction. > “You carry a soul not your own.” > “What… what did I take from him?” > “Only the part that mattered.” Lira approached, limping slightly. She didn’t speak at first. Then: > “You cast Soulbrand.” nodded, barely. > “You shouldn’t have.” > “I saved your life.” > “You burned part of his. That leaves something behind. A mark inside you.” Kael met her eyes. > “Good.” She looked away. > “You’re changing faster than I did. > “Maybe I’m meant to.” > “Or maybe you’re just more broken.” --- 🏚️ Shelter in Ruins That night, they took shelter in the remnants of an old windmill. Kael sat by the dying fire, Codex beside him, closed but warm. Lira patched her wounds in silence. Eventually, she said: > “He wasn’t the only one coming.” > “How many more?” > “Dozens. Maybe more.” > “And we’re the only Ashborn?” Lira hesitated. > “No. Not anymore.” She pulled something from her cloak — a strip of cloth with a blood-drawn glyph. Kael frowned. > “Another Codex mark?” > “Found it on a burned corpse near the river.” > “So someone tried and failed.” > “Or succeeded. Then got hunted .” Kael stared at the fire. > “We’re not accidents.” > “No,” Lira said. “We’re warnings.” --- 🌑 The Codex Speaks As sleep took him, Kael felt the Codex again. Not as a book. As a presence. > “You are no longer ash.” “You are ember.” “And embers light wildfires.” He saw visions. More Ashborn. Scattered. Hunted. Hidden. And behind them—a throne of soot, waiting. A voice whispered: > “Rise. Or kneel. There is no third path.”-- Kael couldn’t sleep. Each time he closed his eyes, the hunter's scream echoed back—twisted, cracked, like a soul unraveling. The air grew thick. Not with heat, but with something worse: memory. Not his. But Tarn Velas’s. He saw flashes: A cathedral burning, not from magic — but from rebellion. A sword plunged through Tarn’s mentor. And Tarn kneeling, weeping, as the Conclave carved the chains into his arms. Kael sat bolt upright. His skin was cold. The grimoire at his side pulsed faintly, a soft red glow in the darkness. > “The Soulbrand does not burn alone,” it whispered. “You carry what you take.” --- 🌒 Lira Notices Lira was already awake, sharpening her dagger by firelight. She didn’t look at him when she spoke. > “You dreamed again.” Kael nodded. > “But they weren’t mine.” > “That’s the cost.” > “Of the spell?” > “Of taking someone’s soul and keeping it inside your flame.” She finally glanced at him. > “You branded him, Kael. You carved his name into your power. Now part of him will live inside you... until one of you breaks.” Kael gritted his teeth. > “Then I’ll burn him out.” Lira looked away. > “That’s what they all say. Until they forget which fire is theirs.” --- 🧭 The Tower They left before dawn, heading northeast — toward the mountains the villagers called The Scorched Teeth. Lira claimed there was something old hidden among the peaks. A ruin. A tower. > “An Ashborn once lived there,” she said. “Long before the Conclave’s rise.” Kael squinted into the mist. > “Do you think they left anything behind?” > “Ash doesn’t vanish,” she said. “It settles. Waits.” The climb was long, the air thin. But eventually, the shape emerged through the fog — a crumbling black tower carved into the cliffside. Twisted metal jutted from the stone like ribs. The door stood open, gaping like a maw. Kael felt the grimoire grow hot against his chest. > “Home.” --- 🏚️ Inside the Tower The air inside was still. Dust lay thick on every surface. But nothing smelled rotten. Only... burned. Long ago. Ash clung to the walls like paint. Kael passed shattered tables, collapsed bookshelves, and iron chains fused into stone. Everything had once been beautiful — and powerful. Now it was a tomb. On the third floor, they found it: A massive circular chamber, with a wall of names. Hundreds — maybe thousands — etched into obsidian, each glowing faintly. Lira approached first. > “This is where the Ashborn recorded the condemned.” > “Condemned?” > “Those who burned, but never died.” Kael read a few names aloud. None meant anything to him — until he found one that stopped his breath. Velas Tarn. The hunter. --- > “He’s already on the wall.” Lira stepped beside him. > “Then he’s not the first to be branded.” Kael looked down at his hand. > “What happens if we keep adding names?” > “Eventually, we forget our own.” The Codex vibrated once. Then again. A new page opened. --- 📜 Spell V – Echo Pyre > Ashborn Spell V: Echo Pyre Let memory burn. Let history howl. Become the voice of those you've consumed. Kael didn’t touch it. > “It’s… a spell to speak with them?” > “To become them,” the book whispered. “To wear their thoughts like a mask.” > “Why would I want that?” > “Because one day, you will forget who you are. And when you do, you will need someone else to remember.” Kael shut the book. Hard. > “No.” --- 🌧️ The Storm Outside Thunder rolled across the peaks. A storm was coming. Lira secured the shutters, then dropped into a dusty chair. > “You shouldn’t have opened the Codex again so soon.” > “It opened itself.” > “Then that’s worse.” Kael sat near the fire, quiet. Finally: > “Why didn’t you use Soulbrand? Back in your first fight?” Lira didn’t answer right away. Then: > “Because I used it once. A long time ago.” She pulled down her collar. A second Ashborn glyph — twisted, cracked — glowed faintly on her shoulder. > “It marked me back.” > “Who was it?” > “My brother.” Silence. > “He tried to kill me,” she added, voice soft. “He wasn’t strong enough. I was. But I’ve never slept without seeing his face.” Kael said nothing. Because he finally understood. The flame wasn’t just a weapon. It was a mirror. And sometimes, it burned back. --- End of Chapter 4
