“Diane.” I said her name like a verdict, gripping the phone tighter than I needed to. Josh’s mother had never once called me directly in the entire year we’d dated, she only communicated through pointed comments at family dinners and passive-aggressive texts to her son that he’d then relay to me secondhand. “I’ll make this real quick,” Diane said, her voice clipped. “Josh tells me you ended things.” “Josh ended things,” I corrected almost immediately. “In the middle of a café, in front of strangers, right after calling me bad luck.
