NOT ONE WOLF. THREE wolves. I was so startled I skittered sideways. My heel came down on a fourth wolf’s paw. No wonder the beast snarled, snapping at the air one inch from my skin. I looked where I was leaping as I backed off this time, hands raised in a gesture of surrender that I hoped was universal. “Sorry. That was totally an accident.” Whether or not they believed me, they pressed in closer. All...six?...of them. One stuck his nose in my crotch, and even though I was outnumbered I thumped the side of my hand down on his muzzle. “Hey!” I warned. “Access is by invitation only. And you’re not invited.” The air turned bitter. I suspected this was some sort of wolf scent language of which I was ignorant. But I could guess at its meaning. Strangers didn’t come into a werewolf village
