Chapter Six 9 am on the 3rd of September, 1939. Harold Stein arrived bearing a letter, which had been sent to him as father’s lawyer, rather than directly to me. It contained details of a government settlement vested on my parents for their services to and for our country. Frankly, I was rather disgusted because I had also received a demand for taxes that morning in the form of death duties, and the one nearly cancelled out the other. Sitting back, I looked at Harold and wondered what I was going to do and how I was going to fund the place and its staff. I sort of thought that I might rake in some money from holding parties, but that alone would not appear to be enough to run the house and ensure its future security.
