Chapter Seven W. W. I. I. Three years into the Second World War, as it is now being called, my home was invaded with injured soldiers all needing care and attention. I had forty young nurses placed under my command, and three hundred or so men with a wide range of injuries to be cared for, and that was how the war passed for us. James was exempt from military duty because of his foot not working right, thankfully, so he was allowed to remain by my side where he became my rock.
