The following week, Emily stood nervously backstage at the open mic night, her heart pounding in her chest. She had signed up to read a piece she had written over the summer—the story of a girl finding her place in the world. As she waited her turn, she could hear Jason’s voice echoing from the stage, captivating the audience with each strum and lyric.
When her moment finally arrived, Emily took a deep breath and stepped into the spotlight. As she read, she stole glances at Jason, who looked genuinely engaged, nodding along with her words. Her doubts melted away, replaced by a rush of confidence. The applause that followed was exhilarating, and when she stepped offstage, Jason was waiting for her.
“You were incredible,” he said, his eyes sparkling. “You’ve got a real talent.”
“Thanks! Your performance was amazing too!” she replied shyly, her face flushing. They chatted a bit, the conversation flowing easily, and she felt a connection growing between them like ivy on a trellis.
From that night on, Jason and Emily began spending time together. They roamed the campus, shared late-night study sessions, and exchanged stories under the stars. With every shared laugh and lingering glance, Emily felt herself falling more and more for the boy with the guitar.
