Leah felt extremely hyper. She had half a thought to go back to the school and perform the first hosting or at least talk to the new ghost in town so that she could explain to the poor girl what all were going to happen to her in the hosting process, and also tell her about her past though Leah thought she might have figured out half of it through Paul.
Also, he had left Sarah and joined her in PE class so Sarah might have walked around the school and got to know more about herself from her other friend's conversations, notes they left in front of her photo in the auditorium and all that.
But Leah knew she had to stay put and do it carefully. Follow the rules and do it right.
She grabbed the straps of her bag and she picked up pace, happy to go back to her brother and Blacky.
"I thought you were this ultra-cool person." Leah stopped in her tracks; eyes wide. "But you act like a complete dork out here. Is it some kind of a fake personality?"
Sarah Foster stood beside her, a curious look on her face as she looked around the neighborhood. "Hmm, I don't remember this place. But then again, I don't remember anything."
Leah just stared at the paranormal entity, her mouth slightly apart.
"What?" The ghost was confused.
"How did you get here?" She wondered out loud.
"By walking, following you." She replied, still confused at why the exorcist was so surprised by it. "Floating was fun. But you took that away from me."
Leah took in a deep breath and nodded. "You need to go back to the school and stay there."
"Why is that?" Sarah gave her a cheeky grin.
Leah narrowed her eyes at her. Even though they could not remember who they are or anything that had went on in their lives, new ghosts happen to have the exact personality as they did when they were alive.
And Sarah was a cheeky person. Not to mention rebellious. She especially loved to do things that she was advised against doing. The fight between her brother and her the day that she died was also because of her doing all these stupid things, and running with the wrong crowd.
There were at least a hundred people who could be suspected of her murder, but they just decided to close the case as soon as they could and now it was up to Leah to find out what really happened.
"You saw what I can do right?" Leah mirrored her cheeky grin.
"Yes." Sarah's smile dropped as she took a step back.
"That was not even one grain of sand in the desert of my powers." That was a lie. She wasn't this invincible being in the paranormal world, but the ghost didn't know that it was better to scare the teen enough to keep her in the school premises than have her wandering around the town, not knowing where she was and who she was. "And the same goes for many other vessels. And trust me when I say that there are some really bad vessels out there.... They could do you as much harm as can be done to a dead person. So you need to stay put."
All the vessels weren't good. As a ghost recollects the lost memories through the vessel, the vessel is also aware of what all happened in their life. There were people who used it against the family of the deceased. And Sarah's family had a lot to lose and Leah could not let that happen.
"Then shouldn't you give me my powers back so that I can better protect myself." Leah narrowed her eyes at the cheeky little creature and resumed walking when she realized some of the kids from her school were giving her weird looks as she was standing on the pavement alone, though they could not see she was speaking because she had the whole of her face covered.
"You think another vessel can't just take it back?" Leah sighed and abruptly turned around. "I mean you have to be both an exorcist and a vessel to do it, but most of them are both."
"What's the difference between them?" Sarah asked.
"Classified information. Let's go, I will walk you back to school." Leah said and started walking back to the school. "I don't trust you. You will go roaming the town if I don't hand you over to Paul."
"You are going the wrong way freak!!!" There was a yell from a passing car and a can of coke was thrown at Leah which she caught, crumbled and tossed in a nearby trash can before she was out of the car driver's sight so that he could see that she was not one to be messed with.
"Whoa, you really are cool. And sweet, walking a ghost back to her abode." Sarah started laughing like a retarded teenager while Leah nodded, rolling her eyes.
Leah didn't know she could call the school Sarah's abode anymore. A ghost was usually connected to a place, object or person. But this one was walking around everywhere.
She had to study this anomaly.
They reached the school where Paul stood at the entrance looking extremely worried and angry.
"Alright go back to your ghost-sitter." Leah chuckled while Sarah laughed, skipping back to him and giving her a quick wave turning around before they both went back in.
Leah felt the atmosphere change abruptly, a sharp pain coursing through her muscles.
"Attachment to the dead is a fallacy you will have to pay dearly for. You will have to pay with your body. Don't make that mistake, my love."
The words echoed in her mind.
It was one of the first things that her grandmother told her when Leah had obtained her powers. Because she was getting chummy with Uncle Joseph and Martha.
And then she said the same thing when Michael came into the picture.
Somewhere, Leah knew that her grandmother was not completely wrong. She had distanced herself from humans and turned to ghosts. Her best friend was a twenty three year old ghost and her closest family member was her dead brother.
But why was this happening when it had never happened before?
Why were all of this anomalies taking place?
Maybe these weren't anomalies? Maybe these were parts of the paranormal that she had never seen before?
But what if they were? And they were happening because something was changing in her?
She needed to find out.
