Memories flash across my mind as I lunge for the master vampire.
I raced through the woods, three days after I left the safety of the hideout. The tug in my heart was stronger, like when a magnet starts to pull something from far away, and it’s pull gets stronger the closer the object gets to it. I had stopped to rest some time ago, and was feeling utterly exhausted as I finished my third day of travel on the outskirts of the city. Quickly, I shifted back into my human form, pulling sticks and leaves out of my hair as I walked the busy streets.
To anyone passing by, I probably looked like a homeless man. I didn’t care. I hurried to a bar I knew my contract would be spending the evening in. By the time I reached it, I had successfully cleaned myself up and actually looked like a productive member of society. I stepped into the bar and moved silently to a table in the corner of the room.
It was a busy place, certainly too busy for an assassination attempt. I waited in silence, waving a waitress away when she approached to ask for my drink order. It wasn’t hard to spot the contract. He was a big guy, fat and sleazy. He was hitting on every girl in the bar, which none of them cared for. There was one girl, I caught her scent as soon as I crossed into the room. Sweet like honey, with a hint of spice. How every wolf in those books described the scents of their mates. My eyes flashed with the power of my wolf, I could feel him wanting to come out. When her eyes met mine, I saw her own wolf’s golden glow in them. She knew who I was, but that bastard was trying to force himself on her, and she looked terrified.
A low, possessive growl rumbled in my chest as I stalked up to the man. I shoved him away from her. “How about we take this outside, just you and me?” I snapped. The man looked annoyed at my intervention, which is why I knew he’d follow me out as I stormed out the back door to prepare. I could feel her eyes on me as I left the room, but I couldn’t look back. Not yet. I needed to finish the job.
It was only a moment. As soon as the man stepped outside, his neck was snapped and his body dumped into one of the dumpsters behind the bar. I didn’t bother cleaning up any other mess. Not when I knew my mate was in the other room. I turned and walked back to the back door.
I didn’t even get a chance to open it when she burst through the door and threw her arms around me while my own snaked around her waist and held her close. I breathed in her scent deeply and felt an overwhelming sense of peace flood through my body. She was a wolf, yes, but who knew even a wolf could truly calm another wolf. I could feel her heartbeat in her chest, fluttering excitedly. I leaned down and kissed the top of her head softly, and just that small moment of intimacy, I felt the connection form.
What is your name? I asked her through our now shared link.
Kyra. She responded, and her voice was music to my ears.
I am Sam.
I watch in horror as the creature lunges for my alpha, who is standing protectively over her mate, my Luna, snarling viciously. In a flash of black fur, I race forward, jumping in front of the monster at the same moment he reaches for Sofia and Alexis. Howls, barks, and snarls ring out as I hear a loud crack, and then everything goes dark...
