Chapter 1: Sofia's POV

I sat calmly in the bar, watching a group of gang members laugh loudly, downing their beers and calling the male bartender back frequently for refills. I could tell he was terrified of the group, and that's the only reason he didn't kick them out.      Well, not to worry, my friend I thought. They soon won't be an issue.      My head snapped away from my targets as the door opened, and a young woman with blonde hair cut quite short and gorgeous blue eyes walked into the room. I felt my heart skip a beat and blinked in surprise, shaking my head. She looked at the male bartender, who seemed more than relieved to see her. He grabbed his belongings from behind the counter and hurried out of the bar, muttering something I shouldn't have been able to hear, but did, on his way passed her.      "Those guys are your problem now. I'm out of here." With that, he was gone. The woman looked at the men uneasily and headed for the bar to put her things away for her shift. I suddenly felt sick to my stomach. If she got caught in the crossfire, I'd feel much worse than if it had been the other guy.      I glared at the men, a low growl forming deep in my chest, thankfully unheard by anyone due to the sheer amount of noise in the bar. I felt my hand rest on my knife, but I had a feeling that wouldn't be my main tool tonight. The woman looked at me from the bar and smiled sadly. I knew she meant that she would be right with me, and I smiled back gently, indicating that I could be patient.      I watched her walk to the men sitting at their table and felt a strange sense of anger grow in my heart. I frowned, not understanding, and shook my head, trying to dislodge the feeling. I couldn't afford to get distracted.      I watched their exchange with a growing sense of dread. Seeing that their server had changed to such a beautiful woman, they began pulling on her, dragging her into their laps and saying such horrible things. She looked incredibly uncomfortable, and tried to pry herself away from the biggest man, but he quickly pulled a gun from it's holster on his hip and held it against the back of her neck.      The bar grew suddenly silent at the same moment I stood and moved my hand to my own gun, holstered on my right hip. The other patrons knew of me, they knew what I was capable of, and they didn't want any part of it. They moved so fast, so well rehearsed, that they were all out the door before I even flipped off the safety and fired my first shot perfectly into the big man's shoulder.      He dropped the gun with a howl of pain, but before the woman could escape the group, another man grabbed her and held her against his chest, drawing his gun and aiming it at the side of her head, his two buddies drawing their weapons and aiming at me. I frowned deeply, suddenly feeling very protective of the woman.      "Drop your weapon! Now!" The man holding her yelled. His arm was around her neck, gun pressed against her temple.      I let out a low growl, now very audible without the noise of the bar. "You don't want to test me here" I snarled. The man I had already shot was slowly pulling himself up, and aiming his gun at my head in his other arm.      I looked at the four men, taking in every detail I could in a matter of seconds. The man I had shot was holding his weapon in his non-dominant hand, which meant his aim would be off quite a bit if he didn't regularly train with it, which I doubted very highly. The other two men who had their weapons trained on my head looked like decent enough shots, but slow. I could probably hit one with my gun and one with my knife before either of them realized what was happening. My only concern was the one holding the woman. She looked scared, but she kept herself relatively calm. The man was holding her in such a way that I couldn't get a clear shot without risking hitting her. I met her gaze steadily as I slowly lowered my weapon, watching her intently as my free hand reached for where I had my knife sheathed. Her eyes follow the movement, and I saw a flicker of recognition light them up.       In less than a second, she bit the man holding her hard and I threw my knife at him the second he dropped his hold on her, at the same time firing my gun at one of the other men who I hadn't hit yet. His shot was fatal, landing square between the eyes. The knife landed deep in the other man's throat, and he let out a gurgling sound as blood spurted from the wound.      Another second later I had crossed the room and tackled the woman to the ground as one man fired at where I had just been and the other fired at where she had been. I guess the big man had trained with both arms. I landed on top of her, growling, "Stay down", and quickly rolled off of her to fire at the other two men, each shot hitting their marks and dropping the men instantly with two head shots.      I could hear the woman shivering and turned to look at her. Her face was flushed, and she was shaking, shocked by everything that just happened. I stood up and went to the man who's throat my knife was stuck in and yanked it out, smirking down at the dying man.      "Shouldn't have tested me" I growled before slicing his throat, ending his life. I clean my blade on his shirt and sheathed it again, also taking the time to flip the safety back on my handgun and holster it once more. I turned back to the woman and held my hand out to her. She took it uneasily, watching me carefully.      "You killed those men… without a care…" Her voice cracked when she spoke, but she was holding up surprisingly well for someone who had very nearly died and then watched  four other people die right in front of her.      "Yeah. No need to thank me. Come on, let's get you out of here" I spoke gently, trying to keep her calm. It worked, thankfully, and she followed me out of the bar into the small town and towards the surrounding forest.      "Are… you going to kill me too?" She whispered.      I chuckled softly. "Sweetheart, if I wanted to kill you I'd have done it already. No, I'm not going to kill you."      I could feel her frown from behind me and she stopped. I huffed and turned to face her. "Then where are you taking me?" She demanded, arms crossed over her chest. She didn't seem even slightly shaken up now. I smirked slightly and she frowned deeper. "Well?"      "To my home. We need to get you cleaned up and looked at in case they did hurt you."      "I'm fine" She insisted, and I glared at her.      "Uh huh. That's why there's a bruise already forming on your neck, right?"      She lifted her hands to her throat and winced at the pain. I guess she hadn't realized that the man had been holding her quite tightly.      "By the way, what's your name?" I asked her.      She hesitated a moment, then finally spoke. "Alexis".      I nodded and continued leading her through the trees to a small cemetery outside of town. I walked straight to one of the larger buildings designed to house the coffin of someone very rich or very important. Alexis hesitated outside the building. I pushed a hidden button at the back of the building and the stone coffin slid aside, revealing a descending, spiraling staircase, heading straight down into darkness.      "After you" I smirked. She gave me a look of utter disbelief, but didn't argue, and started down the stairs into the darkness. I followed after her, and a moment later heard the coffin slide back into place, sealing us into complete darkness.
