“Hi.”
“Hey.” He said, sounding off. “How are you feeling?”
“Better. Why didn’t you call?”
“I’m sorry I wanted to call you yesterday but things didn’t go as planned and I didn’t have service.”
This made me feel better. “That makes sense.”
“Is everything OK?”
I didn’t want to lie to him, but I also didn’t want to worry him. “Yeah.”
“Listen, none of us have slept since we left. We are going to stop and get some sleep, but I should be home late.”
“Ok.”
“Why don’t you sleep in my room so I can see you as soon as I get home?”
“Won’t your family think that is weird?”
He laughed hard, causing me to smile.
“No, they won’t mind at all.”
“ OK, I will sleep in your room.”
We talked only for a short time. I could hear his voice becoming tired and wanted him to get some rest. The sooner he got to sleep, the sooner he could make it home.
After we ended the call, I began to feel sick again. I quickly grabbed a pill from the bottle and washed it down with some water.
Within minutes, I felt better.
After lunch I was discharged from the hospital, which I found odd that it was so close to the main house.
Once back in my room, I tried to call my Mom. It was the first time I had tired in months, but no surprise, she still had me blocked.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. In a week I wouldn’t have any meds left. I needed to get back home. How had I been so stupid to not realize I was almost out of medicine?
I spent the rest of the day in Declan’s room resting. I managed to take a shower and join his family for dinner. I’m not sure why, but I couldn’t stop eating and as soon as I finished eating I wanted to sleep.
After dinner, I slipped into an oversized shirt and a pair of joggers and crawled into Declan’s bed. Within minutes I was asleep.
Declan’s POV
Hanging up the phone, my chest felt heavy. Something in her voice sounded off and I knew she wasn’t telling me something.
“So, a human really is your mate?” Vivian said, sounding bitter.
“Harper…her name is Harper and, yes, she is my mate.”
“Are you planning on being with her?”
“If she will have me, I do. I thought you would be happy for me. You know how finding a mate is a big deal.”
“I know…. I just… I just thought, since neither of us had found our mate that we…” She trailed off and that was when I realized she wanted to be my chosen mate.
“Viv, you will find your mate and it will be amazing.”
“Declan I have been searching since we turned 18. I have traveled the world and stayed with many packs. I think I need to give up.”
“No, you can’t give up. You need to just relax and it will happen.”
She didn’t respond but turned and opened the door to her room.
Making my way to my room, I quickly set an alarm and collapsed on the bed. I just needed a few hours so I could make it back to mate.
It only felt like I slept for a few minutes, but the thought of getting to my mate had me out of bed and heading out the door.
It took longer than I planned to get Vivian and others moving. But once we were on the road, the 3 of them were asleep within minutes. The thought of holding Harper filled my mind and, before I realized it, we were home.
Taking the steps two at a time, I stood in front of my door in seconds. Quietly, I opened my door to see her snuggled in my bed. I took a quick shower and slid into bed next to Harper. Pulling her into me and feeling whole again.
Harper’s POV
I woke the following morning wrapped in Declan’s arms. I rolled over to see him awake and smiling down at me.
“Good Morning.” I whispered.
“I missed you Harper.”
I could feel my face turning red. “I missed you too.”
His lips softly pressed on mine but only for a minute. “Now tell me what was bothering you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Harper…Yesterday on the phone you didn’t sound like yourself.”
Taking a deep breath, I told Declan everything. From me passing out, to my disease to the doctor saying I was perfectly healthy.
He was silent for what felt like forever.
He pulled me to him. “We will figure this out.” He said, kissing my forehead.
“I think we should go back home. I need to find the doctor my Mom used to take me too.”
“Harper, I think it’s best if we let Dr. Golden says.”
“Declan, he says I am fine but I am not fine. People who are fine don’t pass out for no reason.” I blurt out sounding more angry than I meant to.
“He is the best. He will figure this out. Please trust me.”
All I could do was nod. I wanted to trust him, but I think he has too much faith in Doctor Golden.
We both showered and headed to the kitchen for breakfast. I could’t help but feel jealous as the first person I saw was Vivian. Why is she always here?
