Chapter 5

Neither of us really had a chance to see a lot of movies, so we finally decided on one. I sat on the couch and Declan sat right next to me with the popcorn on his lap.
Half way through the movie I felt my eyes getting heavy but I was trying to fight it. I was emotionally drained from everything that had happened.
I woke to a dark room and a warm arm wrapped around me. I realized Declan and I must have fallen asleep while watching the movie. I should have gotten up and gone to my room but I felt safe in his arms and within moments I was asleep again.
The next morning I woke when Declan attempted to move from behind me.
“Good Morning.”
“Harper, I am so sorry I didn’t mean to fall asleep. I hope I didn’t make you feel uncomfortable.”
I managed to smile even though I was filled with disappointment. Of course, he would regret falling asleep and holding me.
“Not at all. It was fine.”
“How does breakfast sound?”
“Good.”
As we ate, Declan was busy on his phone. “Harper, I have a lot of paper work to do, so you are more than welcome to take my car and get out of the house if you want.”
“I could help you.”
He looked up surprised and smiled. “ OK.”
For the next four hours, I was busy helping Declan. “Harper, with your help I am caught up and starting work I usually don’t start till Wednesday.”
“With all this work, you really need an assistant.”
“ OK you’re hired. Well, I have an assistant, but I think I need more than one.”
“What?”
“Instead of being my hostess, why don’t you be my assistant? I will pay you more and you won’t have to work as long hours.”
“But I babysit during the week.”
“All night?”
“No.”
“Then you can figure out during the week how to get some of this done. I will have Luke come by Monday and we will figure out a schedule with my two assistants. ”
“Ok.”
“Great.”
I felt like he wanted to say something else, but his phone rang for the 12th time since we started working.
He looked down and rolled his eyes. He picked up the phone and walked out of his office.
Waiting for him to come back, I noticed I had a few messages.
Chase: Hey!
Me: Hi!
Chase: What are you doing?
Me: Working
Chase: I’m at Firebirds but I haven’t seen you.
Me: I actually got a new job, but it’s still for Firebirds.
Chase: Awesome! Does that mean I can take you out?”
Me: As soon as I know my current schedule :)
Chase: Can’t wait!
Declan walked back into the room visibly upset.
“Are you OK?”
He smiled warmly at me. “I’m fine.”
“If you want to talk, I’m here.”
All he did was smile. “Let’s talk about your new schedule and meet Luke.”
On Monday morning, Declan dropped me off at school and planned to pick me up from my babysitting job at 6. The plan was to have dinner with Luke and work out a schedule and responsibilities.
I was finishing helping Maria and when I noticed Declan’s car pulling into the driveway. I quickly said goodbye and headed out the door.
Sliding into the passenger seat, I smiled over at Declan.
“How was your day?” He asked.
“Good and you?”
“Better now.” He said with a smile.
The car ride was silent as we made our way back to Declan’s home. I noticed as we pulled up to the house another car in the driveway.
As we stepped out, a tall blonde opened his car door and walked toward us. He had to be at least 6’4 or taller. The first thing I noticed was his dark blue eyes. He had a thin nose. He was an extremely attractive man.
“Luke! Early as always.” Declan said, shaking the man’s hand.
“Always sir.” He said with a smile and turned to look at me.
“You must be Harper.” He put his hand out for me to shake, but instead he took my hand and placed a kiss on top.
I smiled, but to be honest it was a bit awkward. He was attractive but something seemed off. Or maybe it was because Declan was standing right next to me.
We found ourselves sitting comfortably around the dining room table. After discussing my role and Luke’s, I realized I would be spending a lot of time communicating with Luke.
Declan had arranged for me to have a new phone and we shared a calendar with all of his appointments.
As I climbed the stairs to my room, all I could think about was how busy my days were going to become.
