Chapter 2

785 Words
DIANA “Where is the mock-up of the Lea Michele spread? I asked for it over an hour ago… Where the hell is it?” She snapped, knowing it was the only way her minions would listen to her. It was almost midday and so far, nothing had gone right for Diana, wrong coffee order, boring pitch ideas and missing spreads. She couldn’t help but wonder if she was surrounded by incompetent idiots. One of her minions, Kristi, rushed into her office carrying a bright blue folder, which Diana instantly recognised as containing the missing spread. “Finally! Thank You!” She breathed a sigh of relief and dismissed her minion with a wave of her hand before reclining back in her chair to review the mock-up. She was almost done when her cell phone rang. Snatching it off of her desk, Diana saw the caller ID and had to do a double take when she saw that it was her sister. Ivy rarely called, and never during the day so this was odd, but not in the mood to deal with her sister’s drama today, Diana rejected the call after the third ring and went back to making her notes. A mere minute later, Diana had finished with the contents of the blue folder and her cell rang again. And again, it was Ivy. This time she picked up. “Hey, can we make this quick? I’m really busy right now. We have an issue coming out in less than a week and the cover shoot is in two days!” Ivy remained silent. “Well?” Diana asked. When her sister finally did speak, the words came out so fast that Diana had to cut her off. “Wait. What? Say that again.” This time she listened carefully to every word that Ivy spoke. “Oh my God!” She said, as her sister continued. The call ended a few seconds later, but Diana remained where she sat; frozen, staring out of the window at Central Park. Her mother was dead. It was the worst possible time and although she knew she had to fly home and be with her family, it totally screwed with her final week of prep for the next issue. “Cassie!” She yelled. Diana’s assistant had been working for her at Luxe Fashion Magazine for almost two years. There was no denying that she was the best assistant Diana had ever had, but she was not perfect. “Yes, Miss Hart?” Cassie asked as she entered her boss’ office with her head down, obviously intimidated by Diana, who was unsure how to broach the subject of her mother’s death. In order to get through this faster, she ultimately decided against it, instead opting to be a little more generic. Grabbing her coat and bag from the stand in the corner, Diana took a couple steps closer to her assistant, who in turn took a few steps backwards. “Look, something’s come up and I have to fly home to Pittsburgh.” That caught Cassie’s attention, but before she even had the chance to respond, Diana continued. “I need you to take point on everything for the next issue. The Lea Michele spread is on my desk complete with my notes, and I am going to put Taylor in charge of the cover shoot tomorrow. I’ll also call Blake Lively’s people and fill them in on the changes.” Cassie nodded in understanding while frantically trying to write everything down as her boss strode past her towards the elevators. Just as she stepped onto the elevator, Diana paused and turned back, hitting the hold button inside the doors. “Oh, and I want final say on everything! Nothing goes to print without my say so! Got that?” Cassie nodded, and with that, Diana released the hold button and the elevator doors closed in front of her. Twenty minutes later, Diana had made all of the necessary calls and was headed back to her apartment. Of course, she still had to call Alexis; her daughter, who was currently studying English at U-Penn. She would be in class at the moment, so she would wait until later to call. Diana had booked herself on to a flight which left JFK in just under four hours and once she had collected her stuff from home, she would be going straight there. .
