Lincoln's POV: The Pale Verge did not close behind us. It was the first indication that something profound had changed. As we walked back over the threshold of the counter-root, I half-expected some kind of resistance – pressure, turbulence, the usual sensation of being released rather than let out. But the Verge was open, its broken sky staying intact, its light diffuse and peaceful. It was not as much like escaping from a wound. Rather, it is much like stepping out of a conversation that hadn't ended yet. I didn’t like that. But I didn’t fear it either. Coming home to Duskbane was quieter than any homecoming I had ever experienced before. It seems like it was not like before eh. No alarms sounded. No emergency mobilizations were needed.
