Serenity Pov
My heart began to beat faster and louder the minute I walked by the church. I felt the cold air, the fire burn, and the water rise inside me. I noticed the markings on the windows. I don't know who built a spirit temple on this planet but it wouldn't be so surprising if someone did. That's how they began to exist outside of Callisto in the first place. Travelers would build them to show respect and have a place to pray to the spirits even when they were far away. Maybe hiding away on planet Earth, there were some spirit holders. I didn't know the real reason and maybe I never would but it was here and I had to go inside. I needed the spirits to tell me something, anything, I needed answers only they could give me. I took a deep breath and headed inside. My mind was full of doubts and so much anxiety but I knew I had to calm down and focus. I looked back at Selene before I went in and smiled as best I could. The inside looked just as run-down as the outside but my eyes immediately caught the alter. I knew it, this place really is a spirit temple. I kneeled down in front of the altar and closed my eyes. I focused as hard as I could but soon enough I felt the spirits close in around me.
My body and mind went blank and I saw nothing but darkness.
"Show me something please," I begged. I suddenly was shown vivid images. I saw Janet and the kids surrounding a dead Chris. My heart dropped. Selene was happy living on Earth. Then I was shocked and filled with so much rage. I was a dark spirit holder.
"I don't understand, I AM THE PHOENIX KING! I am not a dark spirit holder." The vision quickly went away as quickly as it came. I opened my eyes and noticed I had begun crying.
"NO, wait. I want to go home. You need to show me how to get back home," I cried and cried out but they did not listen. The spirits always show you what you need to see and not what you want to see. Selene will stay on Earth, while I become a dark spirit holder. Did I kill Chris? I didn't know what that vision meant or if it had anything to do with the one they showed me before but I knew I wouldn't let it come true. I walked outside and noticed they were all looking at me.
"Serenity, what happened?" Selene asked.
"Nothing," I said softly.
"Your crying," Chris said.
"I'm fine, I just-," the image of Chris dead on the ground as his family looked down at him haunted my mind again.
"We should go home," Derek said. I nodded and took the lead. I wanted to walk alone. I was confused by the vision and unsure about what to do next. I went to sleep without speaking to anyone. That night, I had a dream. It was a good dream. Selene and I were young and we were playing in the garden. I never told Selene this but I got last on the way back to the castle and mother came to find me. She told me she would always find me. That was the first time she told me the story of how our grandmother journeyed to Earth to find our grandfather. It was at that moment that I knew I wanted to have someone love me that much to journey across the universe for me after waiting over fifty years to find me. I knew our parents would come for us but one day they will be gone and I will be all alone. I know Selene wants to find someone to share her life with. I know she one day will if she hasn't already but as for me. I don't think I ever will find someone like that for me. Everyone just ends up scared of me.
I woke up in the middle of the night after my dream ended. I looked over to a peaceful looking Selene and wondered if she would be happier here. I didn't want to leave her here. I got up and went downstairs to grab some water. I grabbed a glass from the cabinet and was scared at the noise coming from the stairs.
"Can't sleep," Chris said as he came into the kitchen.
"I had a bad dream. I mean it was a good dream it just made me feel bad I guess," I told him.
"Oh, want to talk about it," he asked.
"No, not really," I sipped on my glass of water as he stared at me. "You know I am not a bad person."
"I know," he said without hesitation.
"So you like Selene," I said quickly to change the subject.
"Yeah, she is nice and normal," he said. I tried to look for any doubt but he was sure of himself and his response.
"She is kind and wonderful, do not hurt her," I told him.
"I won't but I-," Janet entered the kitchen and interrupted Chris mid-sentence.
"Hey you two, you guys okay," she asked.
"Yeah, I just needed some water," I said and ran back upstairs.
Chris Pov
"So, you gonna tell me the truth," my mother pondered.
"That was the truth," I said. "She was thirsty."
"Okay, okay," she replied.
"Did you have enough to pay rent and the light bill," I asked her.
"Chris," I knew she tried to keep all our issues in the dark but I knew.
"Mom, please, we can't keep living like this," I told her. " One day we are going to get in some deep shit."
"Language please," she tried to smile but I knew she felt the same. We had only one means of income. We had eight mouths to feed now. My mom has gotten fired 3 times this year. I wanted to hope and wish her luck, our luck will change but it never does. We got a loan at the bank to get this nice house and not live in small apartments anymore but we had little money to pay it back. I can feel it. That one day will come and our bad luck will hit ten folds.
