**Victor POV**
Stupid piece of s**t alpha of silver moon. That brat was half my age and acted as if he were some sort of gift to our entire species and therefore better than me. I hated how my wolf surrendered so easily to him. He’d always done that even when his equally pompous and annoying father was the one visiting here. I could see this kid would be a bigger pain in my ass than his holier than thou father.
Who did he think he was to be reporting me over to the elders? Under what authority was he allowed to control my pack? I’d never gone to his packlands and treated him with such utter disrespect.
“It’s not his fault we’re not of true alpha blood. Your father took over this pack by force, he was never meant to rule and neither are we. We should surrender the title to him and cut our losses” my wolf, Kai lectured in my head. No one except for us, my father, and a few elderly members of the pack who were there for the takeover were aware of that. My father was once the Gamma of this pack, but he’d risen up an army of rogues to attack the alpha and beta families, wiping them out completely and thus taking over as acting alpha. To add to the genius of his plan, he’d caused just enough conflict between the rogues for them to completely annihilate each other. Rogues were exceptionally stupid creatures who were incredibly easy to mislead and provoke into enormous acts of violence and c*****e. The only souls on earth who knew the depth of his cunning were him and I. Everyone else just saw him as the gamma who stepped up after a senseless tragedy and managed to drive the savages who’d nearly caused their collective destruction away.
It was an unfortunate reality that while I was a ranked wolf, I was certainly not an alpha. A thing my self righteous wolf wouldn’t dare let me forget. I ignored him and put up our usual barrier when he felt the need to weigh in on my seedier wrongdoings. He was perpetually trying to make me a better man, but unfortunately for him, I simply wasn’t interested in living life like a monk.
I wanted power, money, status. All things I was becoming quite low on. It had been my hope to saddle that good for nothing hypocrite, or at least someone similar to him with my daughter to get her out of my house and also to hitch my wagon to theirs. But no, he just had to accept an omega as his mate, and to make matters worse he’d tattled on us to the elders. If this resulted in a trial I’d be lucky to find my children mates at all, much less the advantageous ones this pack so desperately needed to pump cash back in. What a crock of s**t. I’d been living unhappily wed to Krista for 20 years because of her bloodline, what kind of alpha would weaken his pack by taking an omega as a mate?
The alpha meeting had gone better than expected, with 5 of the 7 packs that arrived agreeing to maintain their treaties with us for one more year under the promise that we would be raising our armies up to their standards so that we could actually benefit them in the event of a war. I was fine with faking that progress until I had the actual money to invest in re-training. The problem was I needed a new plan to come by that since I obviously wouldn’t be able to trap the alpha of silver moon—or anyone else for that matter if the brat fulfilled his promise of reporting us to the elders— into an arranged marriage with Amelia.
“Victor, are you aware of what’s just happened?” Krista burst into my office, speaking immediately. She’d never thought much of knocking, or of treating me with any sort of respect. I sighed waiting for the newest “crisis” she’d surely be griping to me about, knowing this explosion would be nothing compared to the one she’d have when she found out about the elders probably coming to investigate us any minute. I tried unsuccessfully to come up with a plan that would keep me from ever having to tell her and thus avoid her wrath.
“No, dear. I am sure you will tell me presently.” I could hardly hide my sheer hatred for her presence, but the apathy would be impossible to conceal.
“Victor, the alpha of silver moon—who you said would be marrying our daughter if you had anything to say about it— has run off with our omega prisoner, another one of our omegas, and OUR PACK DOCTOR this morning.” Krista growled at me, once again outraged at my lack of information as the alpha of this pack. In her defense, I did have a tendency to be a bit checked out.
Rage ripped through me. First, he reports me to the elders, now he’s stealing my pack members?! I slammed down my glass of scotch, accidentally shattering it in my hand. I cried out as one of the shards of glass went right into the palm of my hand and Krista looked as if she’d leave me right here forever if she could. She continued to stand there as if waiting for me to get myself together enough to respond, not even bothering to offer a helping hand. I could honestly say she’d probably not even offer me any assistance if I were standing before her completely decapitated. I may have hated her presence, I may have hated the sound of her voice, and I may have had no more love inside of me to offer her, but Krista more than just hated me. She despised my very existence to the core of her being, and it absolutely showed.
Suddenly, two men in suits appeared in the doorway and it took everything in me not to cower at the sight of them. These men dripped authority, they were obviously elders. “Good afternoon, alpha. Luna.” They nodded toward me and a puzzled Krista and I actually shuddered to think about how she’d react when she knew why they were here. There would be no putting it off, there would be no containing her reaction, there would only be punishment and her sadistic brand of revenge.
“Good afternoon” I did my best to speak with a confidence I did not feel, could not feel. I didn’t belong here and I could already tell that on some level, the men before me knew that.
“I’m elder Black, this is elder Rivers.” One of the suited men— the one with the long silver pony tail— said sternly. “We’re here to investigate the working and living conditions of your omegas, we’ve received a call that led us to believe them to be substandard.”
To my horror, Krista slowly turned back to me, rage etched into her face but as quickly as it appeared, it was gone. She turned back to the elders, every bit the sophisticated host. “Let me get someone to escort you gentlemen” she offered, seemingly graciously. If I didn’t know better, I’d think she was a lovely woman.
“That won’t be necessary. We’d like to see the omega living and working quarters alone and speak to them alone as well, we just wanted to let you know of our presence as a courtesy.” The elder with the short brown pony tail said dryly. Without a word, they both turned and left, closing the door behind them and I felt like I could actually breathe again for a moment. Just a moment. And then I remembered my luna was still with me.
Krista’s fingers curled around the doorknob, swiftly locking it and stalking over to me. “I’ve known you were a poor excuse for a mate, father, and man for a long time, my opinion of your alpha skill was even lower than that. But if this investigation goes through and our family is stripped of our titles, I want you to be well aware that I will hunt you to the end of the earth until I kill you.” She spat at me, her eyes ablaze with murderous rage I’d always known was hidden just behind her smile.
I swallowed hard and harnessed all the anger and resentment I felt toward this wretched woman and managed to whisper “get out.” With a deadly confidence. She spun around and grabbed the door knob, unlocking it and throwing the door open before stalking out and slamming it behind her.
I was in deep s**t.
