5: Al Williams in a Flat Spin “I’ll never forget the worst test piloting job I ever faced,” spoke up Al Williams. A test job, and Al Williams’ worst sounded to me like a grand yarn. I have always considered Williams the greatest exponent in the world of inverted flight and general aerial acrobatics. He has made a study of that type of flying and because of his skill in mastering an airplane upside down as well as right side up, he has always been especially competent as a test pilot. But here he was admitting that he had had a bad job, in fact the worst one he had ever experienced. “I had volunteered to test this training plane that had a top speed of 101 miles an hour and a landing speed between 45 and 50,” said Al. “Sounds like a cinch,” I said.
