“What kind of messy divorce happened between your father and mother?” I look up from the folder I'm perusing on the floor to stare at Alex. He's bouncing a ball against the wall, close to the large shelf of books. The lighting here is just low enough for me to appreciate his beauty. Alex is a handsome young man. His dark hair is in a shirt ponytail resting on his neck. He's wearing the most basic attire humans like. A hoodie and jeans and yet he looks so effortlessly beautiful in a masculine way. He abruptly turns and catches me staring.
I smile when I notice the tips of his ears going red. He's also very self conscious and utterly shy. “Why do you ask?” Alex shrugs and walks to a potted plant lying in the office, “You know it just had to be messy. Because what other reason would your father have for blocking out every detail about your mum?” I don't bother correcting him. Because I doubt weres have divorces. No. Just mates.
That I strongly suspect wasn’t that case with my parents after all. “I don't think it was messy.” He raises a pointed eyebrow to my position on the floor, surrounded entirely by document folders, “Then why do you have to check census records to find her family?” I shrug, “Because no one knew her.” His forehead creases, “What do you mean? No one knew your mother?” “Yep.” I nod and open a new folder my eyes scanning the words until a particular signature captures my eye, “She's a mystery till today.
Twenty three years ago, My father just appeared with a wailing newborn in his arms. Said the mother had died at childbirth and forbade anyone from speaking about her. And that was that.” “So everyone just believed him?” “He's the Alpha duh,” I chuckle wryly and stand, “Of course they would. Here look at this,” Alex comes to stand next to me and scrunches his face, “That's just a regular were woman.” “Look at her signature,” I point towards the end of the page and turn to him, “Its the same as the one behind the smeared photograph I found in Father's study.”
Alex looks closely, his eyebrows bunching up, “Are you sure?” “Yes!” I feel a sudden rush of excitement at the prospect of being one step closer to my questions being answered. Finally a bit of light in this impossibly dark tunnel. “So you think your mum is older than your dad?” I frown as i look at Alex, “What do you mean?” He turns the document to me, “The date here suggests she's currently eighty-three years old.” “Well maybe–” I frantically search the document and I'm surprised I missed the detail. I had been so focused on how alike the signature looked.
Alex turns the next page and all that newfound hope plummets to the ground. I slump on the floor and shake my head just as he says, “This is her death certificate.” Muttering under my breath, I gather my hair onto the side of my neck, and sigh, “Well isn't disappointment a bitch.” Alex closes the folder and comes to sit next to me, his hands sliding to mine where they rest on my lap, squeezing them. I rest my head against his shoulder and savour the clean soap smell of his.
“Why didn't you check the records at the pack?” He asks in a low voice. I shift uncomfortably until I'm lying on his side, “Father would get too suspicious if he found out I was going through census records. This was the safest option.” I can feel his smirk, “Oh so checking the ones at the town with a human was so much better.” “Shut up.” I roll my eyes at him and sit up. Alex smiles fondly at me as his hands come up to cup my face, bringing us closer. I close my eyes and savour the feeling of his lips against mine.
Warm pressure against my characteristically cold ones. We twist to the side as his tongue brushes my seam for entrance. Which I grant without hesitation. Alex sucks in a sharp breath when I straddle his laps, my hands cupping his face to meet mine, biting on his lower lip. His reaction comes in form of the way his hands bunch up my shirt at the waist before travelling south and resting on my ass, pulling me closer to him.
The kiss turns heated and I draw back instantly. Alex leans in and I press a finger to his lips, stopping his advancement, “Miss me much?” I say softly and Alex groans, resting his head on my neck and kissing the sensitive skin there, “You have no idea.” I smile contendly and caress his hair before standing from his lap. “No, please come back.” Alex pouts as his hand reaches for mine. I smile as I tie up my hair in a ponytail. “I have to get back Romeo.”
walking up to the chair by the window, I retrieve my white roses, “Thanks for the flowers.” Alex gathers all the folders on the floor and returns them to the shelf before walking to me, kissing my forehead, “I love you.” I savour his warmth for a second too long,”I love you too.”
We separate and when I walk out through the back door, the silver iris of my eyes transforms into black with just a thought. Alex is used to it now. Before, it had taken a lot to get him to stop staring so enamouredly at my eyes every time we met. But since I'm about to enter the street, I'll have to look normal. “How do you do that anyway?” I look up at the almost setting sun, hugging my bouquet close to my chest , “I just do.”
Alex smiles like he knows I wouldn't have told him the reason but he still asked anyway. I blow him a kiss as I head towards the pack that'll take me to the border, “Bye, sweetheart!” He catches it and the affectionate exprssion on his face is the last thing I register before I disappear into the swarm of humans walking the streets. Not wolfing out has it's perks with the humans.
I don't have a mating mark to give me away. No pointed ears and best of all, I can camouflage the iris in my eye from the hallmark silver of werewolves to the dull black of humans. That way, i can come and go as I please without fearing that someone is going to report me to the government who in turn are going to hand me to my father. As I get to the park, I deposit the flowers unceremoniously on the ground and look for a tree to scale. Just as I'm preparing to climb, that familiar scent that has since tortured my senses wafts through the air. “Ciara.” I close my eyes and curse under my breath, You've got to be kidding me.
