“You can come in and say hi if you want. Amber would love to thank you in person for letting her use your room at Gord’s.” She opened the door and motioned for Zack to enter. He peeked into the room. Amber lay on the hospital bed, covered in wires and surrounded by monitors. She was asleep, as was the elderly woman slumped in the chair next to her bed. The room had apparently not been included in the redecorating initiative. It was beige and bare. The tiny bouquet in Ashley’s hands would do little to brighten it up. Zack’s throat went dry.
