Ella had always prided herself on being logical, steady, and grounded. She’d been the one people relied on—the calm in the storm. But as she drove toward the garage in the still, cold night, her mind raced with chaotic thoughts. Jax’s text had been brief—Garage. Now.—and yet it carried the weight of everything they’d been through in the past few days.
The night seemed darker than usual, the quiet hum of her car the only sound as she approached the outskirts of Bridgeway. Her chest tightened with every mile, a growing sense of dread settling over her. Whatever Jax had to tell her, it wouldn’t be good.
The garage came into view, its dim lights flickering weakly against the inky sky. The building was a familiar sight, but tonight it felt foreboding, like the scene of a showdown she wasn’t prepared for.
Jax stood near the back, leaning against the hood of his car. He looked every bit the troubled bad boy people whispered about—his leather jacket hung loosely off his broad shoulders, his dark hair fell messily over his forehead, and his jaw was set in a way that screamed determination. But as Ella approached, she noticed the exhaustion in his eyes, the faint tremor in his hands.
"You made it," he said, his voice low and rough.
"You sounded urgent," she replied, trying to keep her tone steady despite the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside her.
"It is," he said, straightening up. "I didn’t want to pull you into this any deeper, but things are moving fast, Ella. Too fast."
"What’s going on?" she asked, her stomach twisting.
Jax sighed, running a hand through his hair. "The job. It’s happening tomorrow night. The Vipers want me to be the driver."
Ella’s blood ran cold. "What kind of job?"
"Transporting something illegal," he replied grimly. "They didn’t give me all the details, but it’s big. And dangerous."
"Then don’t do it," she said immediately.
Jax laughed bitterly, shaking his head. "You think I haven’t thought about that? If I refuse, they’ll come after me. And it won’t stop there."
His piercing blue eyes locked onto hers, and Ella’s chest tightened at the raw fear she saw in them.
"They’ll come after my mom. After you."
Ella clenched her fists. "Then we’ll figure out a way to stop them."
Jax shook his head. "It’s not that simple. These people don’t let you just walk away. If I’m going to get out, I have to do it on my terms."
"What do you mean?"
Jax leaned back against the car, his jaw tightening. "I’m going to sabotage the job. If I screw it up badly enough, they’ll see me as a liability. And liabilities aren’t worth keeping around."
Ella stared at him, her heart pounding. "Jax, that’s... that’s incredibly dangerous. What happens if they figure out it was you?"
"Then I deal with it," he said flatly.
"Deal with it how?" she demanded, stepping closer. "Jax, we’re talking about people who won’t hesitate to hurt you—or worse—if they think you betrayed them."
"I know," he snapped, his voice rising. He exhaled sharply, running a hand over his face. "Do you think I don’t know what I’m risking here? But what other choice do I have? Tell me that, Ella."
"You could leave," she said quietly.
Jax let out a harsh laugh, shaking his head. "It’s not that easy. You don’t just leave the Vipers. They make sure of that."
"Then let me help you," she said, her voice trembling but firm.
Jax turned to her, his frustration evident. "No. I told you, I’m not dragging you into this any more than I already have. It’s bad enough that they know who you are."
"I don’t care," Ella said, her voice stronger now. "You don’t have to do this alone, Jax. And you know it."
He stared at her, his jaw tight. For a moment, the fire in his eyes wavered, replaced by something softer.
"You don’t understand," he said, his voice quieter now. "If something happens to you because of me, I’ll never forgive myself."
"And if something happens to you because I wasn’t there to help, I’ll never forgive myself," she countered.
Jax’s shoulders sagged, the weight of her words sinking in. He stepped closer, his gaze locked on hers.
"You’re impossible, you know that?" he said, his voice laced with both frustration and admiration.
"And you love that about me," she replied with a faint smile.
For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Jax reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His touch was gentle, but it sent a jolt of electricity through her.
"Why do you have to make this so hard?" he murmured, his voice low.
"Maybe I like challenging you," she said softly.
Jax’s lips twitched into a faint smile. "You’re gonna be the death of me, Princess."
Ella stepped closer, her chest brushing against his. "Not if I can help it."
The space between them disappeared as Jax leaned in, his lips capturing hers in a kiss that was both tender and desperate. Ella’s hands found their way to his chest, clutching the fabric of his shirt as though it were the only thing keeping her grounded.
Jax’s arms circled her waist, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them. The kiss deepened, filled with all the unspoken words they couldn’t say out loud.
When they finally broke apart, Jax rested his forehead against hers, his breath warm against her skin.
"You don’t know what you’re getting into, Ella," he whispered.
"Maybe not," she replied, her voice steady despite the storm raging in her chest. "But I’m with you, Jax. No matter what."

The next day, Ella woke to another message from Jax: Meet me at Barnes & Brew after school.
By the time she arrived, her nerves were frayed. The coffee shop was bustling, but Jax had managed to grab a booth in the corner, away from prying eyes.
"You made it," he said as she slid into the seat across from him.
"You said it was important," she replied.
"It is," he said, leaning forward. "I’ve been thinking about what you said last night. About fixing this together."
"And?"
"You were right," Jax admitted, his voice quieter now. "But this isn’t going to be easy, Ella. If this plan works, it’ll get messy. Really messy."
Ella nodded. "I don’t care. I’m in this, Jax. Whatever it takes."
Jax reached across the table, taking her hand in his. His fingers were rough but warm, and the gesture sent a wave of comfort through her.
"You’re too damn stubborn," he said with a faint smile.
"And you love that about me," she replied, echoing her words from the night before.
Jax laughed softly, shaking his head. "Yeah, I do."

That night, Ella lay awake in her bed, her thoughts spinning with everything Jax had told her. She picked up her phone and typed out a single message:
Whatever happens tomorrow, I’m with you.
Her finger hovered over the send button for a moment before she pressed it.
As she stared at the screen, waiting for a reply, she felt a strange sense of calm. For the first time, she knew exactly what she needed to do.
Whatever came next, she wasn’t going to let Jax face it alone.
And for the first time, she felt ready for the fight ahead.
