By the time school ended, Ella’s nerves were a tangled mess. The confrontation with Travis earlier replayed in her mind like a broken record. His smug expression, the veiled threats, and the way Jax had stepped between them—protective and unyielding. She didn’t want to admit how much it had shaken her, but the knot in her stomach was impossible to ignore.
Jax was waiting for her near the parking lot, leaning against his car with his arms crossed. His expression was unreadable, but the tension in his body was obvious.
"We need to talk," he said as soon as she approached.
"That’s what you said earlier," she replied, her voice sharper than she intended.
He didn’t respond to her tone, just opened the passenger door of his car. "Get in."
Ella hesitated. "Where are we going?"
"Somewhere we can talk without interruptions," he said.
She looked into his eyes, searching for reassurance, and found only a quiet determination. Against her better judgment, she climbed in.
---
The drive was silent, the hum of the engine the only sound between them. Ella glanced at Jax out of the corner of her eye. His jaw was tight, his hands gripping the steering wheel like he was trying to hold himself together.
"Are you going to tell me what’s going on, or are we just going to sit in awkward silence?" she asked finally.
Jax let out a long sigh, his grip on the wheel loosening slightly. "I don’t know where to start."
"How about with Travis?" she said. "Why was he threatening me?"
"Because you’re close to me," Jax said, his voice low. "And that makes you a target."
Ella’s chest tightened. "A target for what?"
"For leverage," Jax replied. "The Vipers want me to fall in line, and if they think they can use you to make that happen, they will."
Ella stared at him, the weight of his words sinking in. "Why don’t you just leave them?"
Jax shook his head. "It’s not that simple. You don’t just walk away from people like them. They don’t let you."
"So, what? You’re just stuck forever?"
"Maybe," he said, his tone bitter. "But I’m not dragging you down with me, Ella. I won’t let them touch you."
His words sent a shiver through her, not because they scared her, but because of the fierce conviction in his voice. Jax would do anything to protect her, and that scared her more than the Vipers ever could.
The car slowed as they reached the edge of the Bridgeway woods. Jax pulled off the road, parking in a secluded clearing.
"Why here?" Ella asked as he killed the engine.
"Because it’s quiet," he said, leaning back in his seat. "And because I need you to understand what’s at stake."
---
The woods were eerily still as they got out of the car. The late afternoon sun filtered through the trees, casting long shadows on the ground. Jax leaned against the hood of his car, crossing his arms as Ella stood in front of him.
"You keep asking me why I don’t leave," he began, his voice steady. "But it’s not just about me. My mom... she’s the reason I’m still here."
Ella frowned. "Your mom?"
Jax nodded, his expression softening. "She doesn’t know what I’m involved in, but if I step out of line, the Vipers will make sure she feels it. They don’t care who gets hurt as long as they stay in control."
Ella’s heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice. "Jax..."
He shook his head, cutting her off. "That’s why I didn’t want you getting involved. You don’t deserve to deal with this. None of it."
"Then let me help you," she said, stepping closer. "We can figure this out together."
He let out a bitter laugh, running a hand through his hair. "You think this is a fairy tale, Princess? That we can just magically make all of this go away?"
"I think you’re stronger than you give yourself credit for," she replied, her voice firm.
Jax looked at her, his eyes searching hers for something he couldn’t seem to find. "You’re impossible," he muttered, but there was no anger in his tone.
Ella smiled faintly. "And you’re stubborn."
Their gazes locked, the tension between them crackling like a live wire. Ella’s breath hitched as Jax stepped closer, his eyes dark and unreadable.
"Why do you keep doing this?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Because I care about you," she replied, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions swirling inside her.
For a moment, Jax didn’t move. Then, as if something inside him snapped, he closed the distance between them, his lips crashing against hers.
The kiss was urgent, a collision of frustration, desperation, and something deeper. Ella’s hands tangled in his hair as he pulled her closer, his grip on her waist firm but gentle. The world around them faded, leaving only the heat between them.
When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathing heavily. Jax rested his forehead against hers, his eyes closed.
"You’re gonna be the death of me, Princess," he murmured.
"Not if I can help it," she replied, her voice shaky but determined.
---
The moment was broken by the distant sound of an engine. Jax stiffened, his entire body going rigid.
"Stay here," he said sharply, stepping away from her.
"What’s going on?" Ella asked, her heart pounding.
Jax didn’t answer. He moved to the edge of the clearing, his posture tense as the sound grew louder.
A black SUV emerged from the trees, its tires kicking up dust as it came to a stop. Two men stepped out, their expressions cold and predatory. Ella recognized one of them immediately—Travis.
"Pierce," Travis said, his tone mocking. "Thought we’d stop by for a little chat."
"I’m not in the mood," Jax replied, his voice hard.
Travis smirked, his eyes flicking to Ella. "You didn’t tell me you’d bring a friend."
Jax stepped in front of her, his fists clenched. "Leave her out of this."
"Relax," Travis said, raising his hands in mock surrender. "We’re just here to remind you of your priorities."
"I haven’t forgotten," Jax said through gritted teeth.
"Good," Travis said, his smirk widening. "Because if you don’t follow through, things are gonna get messy. For everyone."
Ella’s blood ran cold. She could feel the weight of Travis’s threat, the unspoken danger lurking beneath his words.
Travis and his partner climbed back into the SUV, the engine roaring as they disappeared into the trees.
Jax turned to Ella, his expression dark and unreadable. "I told you to stay out of sight."
"I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing," she said, her voice trembling.
"This isn’t a game, Ella!" Jax snapped, his anger boiling over. "You don’t get to play hero and walk away unscathed."
"Then tell me what to do," she shot back. "Because I’m not leaving you to deal with this alone."
Jax stared at her, his chest heaving. Slowly, his anger faded, replaced by something softer.
"You’re insane," he muttered, running a hand through his hair.
"And you like it," she replied, a faint smile tugging at her lips.
Jax let out a breathy laugh, shaking his head. "I don’t know what I’m gonna do with you, Princess."
"You’ll figure it out," she said.
For the first time, Jax smiled—a real, genuine smile. It was fleeting, but it was enough to make Ella’s heart race.
"Come on," he said, grabbing her hand. "Let’s get out of here."
Ella followed him back to the car, her hand warm in his. She didn’t know what the future held, but for the first time, she felt like they were facing it together.
And for now, that was enough.
