Chapter 34

The ground groaned beneath our feet like it was alive, and my wolf screamed in terror and anticipation. The cracks in the obsidian floor spread faster than my mind could process, jagged veins of darkness twisting toward us, trying to swallow everything in sight. I clung to Dastien, his hand warm and steady around mine, as if his presence alone could anchor me to reality. But the void around us was bending, folding in on itself, and my visions flared with violent intensity, showing flashes of destruction, blood, fire, and a shadowed figure with silver eyes that pierced through the chaos. “We can’t stay here,” Dastien growled, his voice low, commanding, cutting through the roaring chaos. His golden eyes were sharp, calculating, filled with that primal fire that always made my wolf stir with obedience. “Follow me. Now.” I swallowed hard and nodded, trying to focus on him instead of the swirling madness around us. My wolf growled, muscles coiled, claws scraping the obsidian as if it could sense the danger in ways my human mind could not. Every step we took felt heavier, each breath a struggle as the air itself thickened, like we were breathing through molten smoke. Shadows surged around us, writhing, whispering promises of power, fear, and pain. Then I saw movement—a flicker of silver, the same figure from my visions, materializing at the far end of the hall. The minions, malformed creatures of shadow and nightmare, began to assemble behind it, a living tide of teeth, claws, and darkness. My wolf growled, low and guttural, sensing the immense danger that radiated off the figure in waves. “We have to split them up,” Dastien said urgently, his teeth gritting. “I’ll draw the figure’s attention. You take the minions.” I hesitated. My wolf screamed, instinct urging me to stay close, but Dastien’s golden gaze locked onto mine, demanding trust. I swallowed, nodding once, and released a shuddering breath, letting my wolf surge just enough to take control. The minions lunged, their jagged forms flashing like broken glass in the dim light. I moved, a blur of black skater dress and gloves, claws glowing faintly as they connected with shadows. My wolf guided me, weaving through attacks, striking with deadly precision, instincts honed to lethal efficiency. Every time a creature fell, it dissolved into smoke, only for another to take its place. The figure on the dais, silver eyes glowing, watched with calm amusement, letting the chaos unfold like a conductor with a symphony of destruction. Dastien advanced, a golden storm of power and control, striking the figure directly with bursts of force that made the shadows scream. But the figure absorbed it, twisting reality around its form, evading with supernatural grace. My wolf hissed in frustration. Every strike we landed felt temporary, fleeting, like trying to catch water in your hands. Then it did something impossible. The figure’s eyes glowed brighter, silver fire burning like ice and sunlight intertwined, and the shadows responded instantly, forming into a massive, writhing serpentine shape that surged toward us. The hall itself seemed to breathe, walls pulsing with energy, as if it were alive and feeding off our fear and effort. “Move!” Dastien yelled, dragging me backward as the shadow serpent lunged. My wolf snarled, instincts screaming, but I let him guide me, moving in sync with the rhythm of our fight. Every strike, every dodge, every surge of power was a dance of survival. I glanced at the figure, heart hammering. “Why are you here?” I demanded, voice trembling, though my wolf roared with my words. “What do you want from me?” The figure tilted its head, expression unreadable, silver eyes burning into mine. “I’m not here for you… yet,” it whispered, voice like ice over fire. “But your power… your wolf… it belongs to me, Tessa McCaide. And I will claim it.” My stomach dropped. Every instinct in my body screamed in terror and rage. My wolf surged, claws tearing through shadows, fangs flashing, as I moved closer, driven by a mix of fear and defiance. Dastien met me halfway, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Focus on me,” he growled, eyes blazing. “They want to scare you. Don’t let them. Control your wolf. Control yourself.” I inhaled sharply, letting his words anchor me. My wolf quieted slightly, muscles tensing but obeying, claws glowing faintly as a surge of energy flowed through me. Together, we faced the advancing shadows, ready to fight, ready to survive. Then it happened. A blinding light exploded from the figure’s chest, and a wave of pure, burning energy surged toward us. My wolf howled, lungs straining, claws digging into the floor as I tried to resist the force. Dastien roared, golden energy flaring around him, creating a protective barrier that shivered under the pressure of the attack. The minions scattered in panic, shrieking as they were consumed by the light. I felt my vision blur, the world spinning, reality folding in on itself. My wolf surged uncontrollably, instincts screaming, claws tearing at the air as the energy washed over us. And then… silence. I opened my eyes slowly, heart hammering, muscles trembling. The hall was gone. The shadows, the minions, the figure—it was all gone. Only Dastien remained, his golden eyes softer now, gaze fixed on me. “Tessa…” he said, voice rough, low, almost breaking. “Are you okay?” I swallowed, shaking my head. “I… I think so.” My wolf whimpered, body tense, as if aware the danger wasn’t over. “But they… it wasn’t just a fight. It was like… they were testing me, seeing what I could do, seeing how far I’d go.” Dastien’s jaw tightened, and he pulled me close, hands gripping my shoulders firmly. “They are testing you. And they’re not done. That figure… it knows about you, Tessa. It knows what you are, and it will come for you again.” A cold shiver ran down my spine. My wolf growled low, a warning. I could feel it—the presence of something watching, waiting, lurking just beyond the veil of reality. “We need to get out of here,” Dastien said, eyes scanning the shadows, ears attuned to every sound. “Now.” I nodded, following him as the hall began to dissolve, the floor beneath us crumbling into nothingness. My wolf surged again, claws digging into Dastien’s hand as if holding onto him was the only thing keeping me tethered to sanity. We landed hard on solid ground, the world spinning around us. The air was thick, humid, and smelled of iron and wet earth. I staggered, trying to catch my breath, but my wolf hissed, alert, sensing the danger that still lingered. Dastien steadied me, golden eyes sharp. “We’re not safe yet. That figure… it knows our weaknesses. And it will exploit them. But we’ll survive. Together.” I nodded, swallowing hard, trying to focus on him instead of the terror rising in my chest. My wolf growled, muscles coiling, instincts sharp. I had survived the first wave, but I knew—deep down, to my very core—that this was only the beginning. And in the distance, a shadow moved, faster than my eyes could follow, silver eyes glinting like ice. Watching. Waiting.
