Chapter 36

822 Words
The forest had gone unnaturally quiet, the kind of silence that made your skin crawl and your wolf tense. I could feel every twitch of the leaves, every shift of the air. Dastien’s presence beside me was grounding, but even he looked uneasy, muscles coiled like a predator ready to strike. The moonlight filtered through the trees, casting shadows that looked alive, twisting and stretching in ways that didn’t make sense. “We need to move,” Dastien said, voice low, dangerous. His golden eyes scanned every corner of the darkness. “They’ll be back. And they won’t wait long.” I swallowed hard, glancing at him. My wolf thrummed beneath my ribs, impatient, sensing the danger lurking just out of sight. Every instinct screamed that we were being hunted, that whatever we had just encountered was only the beginning. I nodded, gripping his arm, feeling the tension radiate from him into me. We moved through the forest, feet barely making a sound on the soft earth. The shadows seemed to shift as we passed, almost as if they were alive, following us, waiting. My mind kept flashing images of the silver-eyed figure, the cold, cruel smile, the way it had threatened us. My wolf growled low, body coiled, claws itching beneath my gloves. “Do you think it knows about me?” I asked, voice barely above a whisper. Dastien’s jaw tightened. “It knows more than you think. That’s why it came after us tonight. It’s testing us… probing our strengths and weaknesses. And it will be back. Stronger, smarter, and deadlier.” I shivered, the weight of the words settling over me like a suffocating blanket. My wolf growled again, ears flattening, sensing the approaching danger before I could see it. Then I saw it—movement in the corner of my eye, faster than anything human or wolf should move. I spun, claws flashing beneath my gloves, and caught a glimpse of silver eyes watching from the shadows. “They’re here,” I whispered, heart hammering, wolf snarling, muscles coiling. Dastien’s hand found mine, gripping tight, grounding me. “Stay close. Don’t let them separate us.” His golden eyes flared as he moved forward, body tense, ready for battle. The shadows shifted, twisting into shapes that lunged at us, jagged and dark, radiating cold energy. My wolf surged, instincts taking over, claws striking with feral precision. The energy around us crackled as Dastien flared his golden light, creating a barrier against the assault. The figure stepped forward from the darkness, silver eyes gleaming, aura pulsing with power. “You cannot hide, little wolf,” it hissed. “You will come to me. And when you do, everything you love will burn.” I felt a surge of fear, but beneath it, a burning defiance. My wolf roared, claws slicing through the shadows, muscles coiled and ready. Dastien moved beside me, golden light flaring, protective and fierce. Together, we pushed forward, driving back the shadows, forcing the figure to retreat slightly. “You’re stronger than I thought,” it said, voice cold and cruel. “But strength alone won’t save you. You will come to me… willingly or not.” I swallowed hard, wolf growling, heart hammering, adrenaline surging through me. The forest seemed to tighten around us, shadows stretching, the moonlight bending, as if the world itself was holding its breath. Dastien tightened his grip on my hand, eyes blazing. “We survive tonight, but next time… next time it won’t be like this. We need a plan, Tessa. And we need allies.” I nodded, feeling the weight of his words. My wolf whined softly, sensing the danger lingering, refusing to relax. The silver-eyed figure had retreated, but its presence was still here, a cold whisper brushing against my mind. “We’ll find them,” I said, voice steady despite the fear gnawing at me. “We’ll stop them before they hurt anyone else.” Dastien’s lips curved in a faint, grim smile. “I know we will. But first… we survive the night.” The forest around us seemed to breathe, shadows flickering, the air thick with anticipation. My wolf prowled beneath my skin, muscles taut, senses heightened. Whatever was coming, I knew this was only the beginning. And then, from the darkness, a low, chilling growl echoed, closer than before, sending shivers down my spine. My wolf snarled, claws digging into the earth, and I realized… it had found us. The silver-eyed figure stepped out of the shadows, eyes locked onto mine, a cruel smile curling its lips. “You can’t run,” it whispered. “You belong to me.” My wolf erupted, energy surging, instincts screaming, and Dastien flared his golden light, creating a shield between us and the figure. The shadows lunged, jagged and twisting, but we met them head-on, claws and light striking in perfect sync. The battle had begun.
