Chapter Four

Turns out we were going to an airport, not just any type, a privately owned one by the Robertsons. I didn't know why I was so surprised when I learnt they had their own privately owned hangar. They were rich enough to afford it. It had been close to an hour since the plane took off and to say I was bored was the understatement of the century. The whole crew kept their distance from us, going ahead to occupy a separate cabin whilst leaving Damien and me in our cabin, an uncomfortable silence descending upon us. I prayed a silent prayer within me that Damien would reciprocate the gesture I was about to show him. I pulled myself together and asked him, "What do you do on long flights like this?" I asked and got no reply, he just continued to stare at his laptop as though it had all the answers to his life's questions on it and like I hadn't said anything. I decided to try again, "Excuse me please, but what do you do on flights like this?" My voice was barely above a whisper. I don't know why I was suddenly afraid of him but after that stunt, he pulled on me at the wedding, I saw something evil about him, like there was this dangerous aura surrounding him. If that wasn't enough to make me scared, I didn't know what it would be. I got a response this second time I asked him, not a worded response but he sighed and that counted as something right? "I heard you the first time and I thought you were smart enough to get the memo that I wasn't going to respond but obviously you're not, so I'm going to tell you now, I'm working and I'd like to be alone, so go watch a movie or whatever it is kids do these days." He answered dismissively and went back to working on his laptop. His answer was like a slap to my face but I got the memo he was passing along, so I wordlessly stood up from the seat in front of me and made my way to the cabin where my luggage had been put. I grabbed the iPad I met in the room and did as he had suggested, I watched movies. Somewhere between my fourth and fifth movie, I had fallen asleep, I woke up to someone gently shaking me, "Mrs Robertson! Mrs Robertson! Please wake up, the plane has landed." I wasn't able to grasp what the person was saying because of the state of sleep I was still in. "Damien??" Was the first thing my idiotic self muttered. "Mr Robertson has left ma'am." The voice told and that was enough to make me fully open my eyes, sleep departing from me immediately. I sat up straight and was now face to face with the host who had run us through the safety precautions when we wanted to take off. "What do you mean by Mr Robertson has left?" I asked in a panicked state. "I mean he just left the plane right now. He told me to check up on you and that he'd be waiting outside." She fully explained herself. "Oh!" I let my body relax and told the host I'd be right out. I wheeled my luggage out of the plane to a black car that had its doors open, a man was waiting for me in the car, so he reached out and took my luggage from me and put it inside the trunk of the car. I peered into the car and saw Damien sitting inside, his legs crossed over one another, his phone in his hand, scrolling through it. I released a heavy sigh and entered the car, pulling the door shut with me as I got settled in the passenger seat. The car sped off when I got settled down. I had never been to Paris before, it was the city of love and the only reason I held back was because I always wanted to come here with my husband or fiancé. In a way, I was here with my husband. Ironically, right? I had been holding myself back all these years, just so I could eventually come here with a total stranger. The pressing thoughts on my mind didn't even allow me to enjoy the scenery as we drove by, "I know this arrangement is just a joke to you and you said it yourself that we have an image to keep up with in the outside world, so it wouldn't hurt you to be nice to me you know? In front of your employees at that." I calmly stated. "My employees won't be a problem, those that work closely with me are my most trusted allies so you don't have to worry about them, they all know this is fake." He gestured between both of us. "They know? How could you share such sensitive information like that with them?" I gaped at him. "Calm down, I didn't share anything with them. Fortunately or unfortunately, my reputation precedes me, so they know I wouldn't be caught dead in a relationship, talkless of being married." He stated so casually like we were talking about the weather. I didn't bother to say anything again after his response. We arrived at the hotel we would be staying in a few minutes later and Damien checked us in. We were given our room and a key card was given to us. As we were riding the elevator upstairs, I decided to ask the one question that had been pressing on my mind since. "If this is a contract marriage, what do you stand to gain from all this?" I innocently asked and saw Damien tense up immediately. "I suggest you mind your business, Lillian." He told me curtly. "I'm sorry, I just want to know what's in it for you, since you hate the idea of marriage so much, why bother to put yourself through all this torture?" I finished. The moment the words left my mouth, Damien turned sharply to me, "You want to know what I'll be getting? Come, I'll show you." He told me the moment the elevator doors opened. He then grabbed my wrist and dragged me out of the elevator and into our room. My body went limp in fear because of his actions, the only thing I could wonder in my mind was, what was he going to do to me and what did he want to show me?
